Suggestions about taking off swirl remover and polish to lay down more clear.

Hey all,

The title is the simple request.

The back story for those who care to read:

I've refinished a guitar. I laid down clear and the sides came out fantastic but the front and back had some orange peel. I wet sanded the orange peel flat (1000/1500/2000) and then went to buff and polish it.

When I was done the front and back looked horrid. Almost a matte finish. Where as the sides still looked amazing. At this point I think I have to re clear the front and back of this but I need to remove the polish and swirl remover first. Should I just use something like a 500 wet sand till I have scuffed up the clear enough or should I use wax and grease remover first? (or some other chemical remover)

Thanks in advance.
Jay

I apologize for my ignorance but I'm just trying to learn.
And if mistakes are learning experiences at this point I should be a fricken genius.

stopping at 2k is the problem. i know many do it but if you sand all the way to at least 3k it will buff up and be clear . i spend my time sanding not buffing. if your going to reclear hit it with w&g remover then scuff up with the 500 . i use every grit . 1000/1200/1500/2000/2500/3000 and now even the newer 4k or 5k . haven't used beyond 3k but i will on the next job .

Pictures would help a lot but sounds like you need to keep buffing. 2000 is hard scratch to remove

Like said, don't need re-cleared, just buffed.
Swirl mark remover will not take out scratches, used a course compound until ALL the scratches are gone, then you go to next step.

It used to be that a 2000 scratch was very easy to remove. Something has definitely changed over the years, probably the clears are just a lot tougher, and even ones that are considered easy to polish (like SPI Universal) are still much tougher than the clears of yesteryear.

Yes the clears are tougher and the compounds are better BUT I field these calls everyday and the real problem is not using the right pads, in last 8-10 years pads have changed and if you are using the wrong one for the compound you are using, you will make a career out of buffing a panel.

I use the Presta, only because I have used it for about 20 years and know exactly what to do and what to expect.
All the compounds are so good today it don't matter what you use, just know the line and MOST important know what pad goes where.

I'm still stuck on the ole wool pad for compounds and then I move the grey and blue pads for polishing. This is all with the 3m system. i tried their foam white pad for compounding and i didnt like it at all.

I agree, I cannot master the foams, gave up trying 5 years ago. To each their own.

i stopped using 3m crap years ago . i use the cg system now and have no problems at all. lake country pads and the vseries compounds .

Lake country are the only foam.pads worth having IMO. all foam pade are not created equal even if they look and feel similar.

No one has answered the OP's question - how to get the existing surface ready for a respray.

That's because it's very likely he does not need to respray, but he hasn't come back to chat, so here we are.

Sorry to not get back faster but once I fixed everything I was off to the races. I was able to get it finished and gave it to my buddy and he loved it. (I'll get some pictures up soon)

I took both Shine's and Barry's advice. I sanded to 3K (Shine's advice) and then used a rubbing compound (Barry's advice)

It turned out fantastic and I learned something new.

So thanks again for the assist and next time I'll post pics. I'm sure if people saw it they'd all have given me the same advice.

I'm a wool pad user but I stop sanding at 2,000. to me it buff's so easy with 2000 I haven't found much need to go finer... I however use the coarser presta with their black wool pad which is course as well. Most body guys that come in the shop think i'm nuts when they see how fast I run my buffer though. Barry got me set on using this combo when he stopped out years ago. On darker colors I sometimes hit it with the 3,000, but not to often.
