Top coat over epoxy?

On another thread, there was a mention of not top coating directly over epoxy, as this could lead to failure of the top coat. I had been under the impression that epoxy (inside the recoat window) was an excellent primer for single stage paint.

Was I mistaken? Does SPI epoxy require a sealer coat before painting?

Thank you.

Can you link to or quote the thread? SPI epoxy inside the 7 day window is an excellent substrate for most auto refinish materials.

You can shoot singlestage over sanded/scuffed cured epoxy no problem and adhesion will be decent-as good/strong as the singlestage's grip will allow. If you shoot the paint over the epoxy within the re-coat window the adhesion is better, or a simple sealer coat of epoxy adds a lot of adhesion to the process. I'll be shooting some PPG DCC tonight over a sealer coat of epoxy and I'll tell ya there's just no way to separate the bond once full cure is reached.

JimC is certainly referring to fully cured epoxy in that last remark. Fully cured epoxy should be sanded and sealed before refinishing.

newbie here,
I did a search and found this thread. I'm going to shoot the body shell of my Camaro tonight, and another coat of epoxy tomorrow. I have my color down to the final choice, and got a pint of SS to spray and make sure it's what I want. My plan was to shoot the SS on the tail light panel well within the 7 day window. I have been told that SS and BC/CC even though the same color code can look completely different, is there truth to this? I was also planning on shooting universal clear on the SS ... good idea? bad idea?

BTW, I am using a solid color, not metallic

With a solid color you might get away with a decent match if the paint store did a good job and the tints were consistant. Clear always adds durability/UV protection to singlestage.
