Universal Clear

Im going to be using SPI Universal Clear over a non metallic Pro Spray Base custom color. SPI Universal Clear lists two options:

Universal Clear 1:1 4.4 VOC

2.1 VOC Universal Clear 1:1 2.1 VOC

What is the difference?

Much like the urethane reducer you inquired about, the same holds true to the clear coat. Some areas of the country have very strict volatile organic compound (VOC) restrictions. I have always used the 4.4 as I'm not restricted by VOC's regulations. Some guys like the 2.1 VOC even though they don't have to follow VOC restrictions. I would say that you could go either way, but I'm told that they do spray differently. I would stick with the 4.4 VOC if you are not in a restricted area.

Thanks danp, maybe some more input comming on the difference between the two. I will be ordering next week and unless I get more input, I will go with what you recommend.

I have used both. Its been several years since i used the voc compliant unv. If memory serves me correct the low v sprayed thicker, that seems to be what sticks out in my head.
For what its worth I've been using Barry's products for well over a decade now and i always go back to the standard Universal. Its the Caddy of the clears and I've shot them all.. If you use the very slow activator in the Universal its even better...
Happy Spraying
