Using a Shrinking Disc

Just picked up Wray's ultimate setup off Ebay. Going to finish reading "Key to Metal Bumping" and then watch his video. I plan to use it first on my rear quarter repair, but have a lot of spots on the car to do (especially doors).

I am trying to take a lot of pics so you guys can see what kind of luck a total DIY beginner has :)

I use a sunchaser waffle disc and I really like it. The more you use it the more you like it and become proficient. It's on a heavy makita grinder. I've worn out a couple discs over the years.

On my disc I only use plain Ivory soap on aluminum parts. Otherwise they tend to burn the alum and the waffle discs looks like a 80 grit DA paper after it has sanded gummy paint. Has aluminum balls burnt to it.

Some really good tips on here about the usage. The sunchaser setup recommends turning the steel blue before quenching each time. It seems to work good that way.

The soap help to keep the stainless disc from galling.

The idea behind the Sunchaser discs "corrugated" shape it that it acts as a tapping motion in addition to the friction. In my opinion it just makes it incredibly noisy. There is effecively less surface area so it heats a bit slower than a flat disc. Many people who have used it feel that it works best right before it wears out( when it is nearly flat). I have moved over to Wray's disc but still have the Sunchaser disc. I had the opportunity to take Ken's class several years ago when the class was quite affordable. The hammer/ dolly portion of the class was very informative.Too bad he burned out.
