Using epoxy primer as sealer

Hi everyone, I have a couple questions on using epoxy primer as sealer, will the reduced epoxy adhere well to 500 dry grit finish on 2k primer, I also plan to spray the reduced epoxy and then come back the next day and if all is well spray my bc/cc, will “reduced” epoxy primer need sanding if spraying 24hrs later, if ok to spray without sanding can you use a final wipe cleaner before tach cloth and painting.
Thank you all.

24 hours is stretching it. I reduce 25% if the sealer will sit overnight. I spray sealer late afternoon and base first thing the next morning. If you let it sit too long you will lose the chemical adhesion.

Thank you both, I guess reducing it changes everything, reduced 25% do you guys normally spray just one medium coat?

When using the Black Epoxy as a Sealer ya'll are mixing 1:1:1 ? Wouldn't that be kinda thin and require more than two coats? Would a 1:1: 1/2 be a little thicker layer and still work OK?

It really depends on what you need out of a sealer. I do 1 coat @ 1:1:1. Its usually over epoxy or 2k and im not really trying to fill many sanding scratches. Its really there for adhesion of the base only. Think of it more like spraying an adhesion promoter. After its sprayed i do a 15 or so minute flash then go right to base. If you are looking to actually prime again then yes, you would do 2-3 coats, wait 24hrs then sand and spray base right away.

I just want it to seal and stick well. I guess I can spray as a sealer then 2nd or 3rd coat un reduced. Then the single stage black. Thanks

i think you might be confused. there is no need for 2nd or 3rd coat of unreduced epoxy before color.

a rule of thumb i use is 1/1/1...spray it like a basecoat, looking for 1 light coat of coverage and thats it. wait 15 -30 mins as Jim already said.

another method is 1/1 20% reduced. the night before and basecoat in the morning. ive done both , and gotten the same results. a truly flawless impeccable paint job, in backyard hard standards.

Excessive sealer is going to add additional lumpiness or urethane wave to the finish as well. Imo, if doing a single stage, in most cases i would not even seal. The effects of epoxy sealer really shines with a bc/cc. Ss adheres extremely well as it is. I would only seal if i had 2k cut throughs all over or it was something that was going to see excessive long term water like a boat hull.
