Wet sanding / buffing

Guys probably a dumb question but when wet sanding clear do you need to sand in the same direction for all steps? Also when buffing what do you use to clean between compounds, 710?

Forgot to mention, I will be sanding by hand.

I sand with the body lines (vs. Cross hatch)
710 works. Sprayway glass cleaner works great also
