What happened?

Stripped to bare metal. 80 grit da. 2 coats SPI epoxy. Filler. 2 more coats SPI epoxy. Blocked. 2 coats SPI 2k primer. Blocked. 2 more coats SPI 2k primer. Been sitting in shop for about 2 months and I have just now wet sanded it to 600 grit to get ready for base coat. Perfectly flat and was admiring my work and noticed these yesterday. 3 spots on the hood are like this. First picture shows tiny pimples you can feel. Second picture shows where I sanded the spots down to find out what is going on. You can clearly see the outline of epoxy that was covering these spots. And you can clearly see tiny rust spots which I assume caused the pimples. Very frustrating to get to this point and have this issue. Any ideas what I did wrong or what is happening?

Those tiny rust spots (pits) need to be removed before epoxy. Those little spot blasters would have taken care of that in seconds. Very frustrating, but I would be much happier now than painted, cleared, buffed, assembled, then later.

I would have thought that those little spots being sealed off from O2, would have not reared their ugly little heads?

I have heard that said before by a "pro" nearby. To me if you are covering up rust, you're just asking for problems down the road.
Too many times I have cars brought to me that have had rust under filler, primer and paint.
 
Yes I am glad I caught them before all the other painting process. But now worried if there are more that haven’t had time to migrate to the surface. I hate to strip the entire hood back down to bare metal and start over.
 
I live in Mississippi so it’s humid most of the summer but not anymore than usual.
 
How long did it sit between 80 grit and epoxy? I am in Mississippi too and I have found that you need to put the epoxy on immediately. The humidity here does not make it easy sometimes.
 
Epoxy went on soon after the 80 grit but I can’t remember how long. I know I tried to get everything in epoxy as quick as possible after the da.
 
Could I just brush a little epoxy on those spots after I clean the pits. Then dolphin glaze followed by 2k primer? Thoughts

I would wire wheel the cratters to remove the rust, then put epoxy on it to seal up. Followed with the glaze…

You wont hate it near as much now, as you wiould after you get it finished.

I’m not a fan of wire wheels and pits, because sometimes the wheel can polish the little black crud down in them and they appear clean. But that nugget from hell is still lurking in there. Those little spot blasters with rubber nozzles work well here, or the little hand held cup blasters with fine crushed glass before primer is applied is what I use.
