Window rain guards

Have someone that wants me to color code a set of those black things that go over the windows. Any tips on ensuring it is prepped properly?
 
I have painted a few, what I did was scuffed with a red scotch pad and sprayed adhesive promoter a coat of epoxy then base. Not sure if it's right, but haven't had them peel.
 
Did you do both sides or just the outside? I won't be able to use epoxy. Mobile work.
 
I have done both sides on a couple, but when I worked in a body shop I only painted the outside, boss was cheap lol.
