1965 Buick Special Convertible

Here's the current project I am working on. I am not a pro by any means just a guy that is trying to develop the skills to bring these old cars back to life.
This one needed more "help" than what it first appeared to.

Another little surprise was this A Pillar rust:

Made a patch:

Stripped the used quarter and found a few spots in need of help. A couple of "old" repairs.

First coat of epoxy primer:

Will try to get a second coat on tonight or first thing in the morning and maybe hit those spots I see I missed in the pictures.
And then to get it all straight.

The used quarter panel was pretty dented up and needed a lot of TLC. I primed it with SPI black epoxy and then lightly block sanded with 150 grit to find the highs and lows.

After too many hours of body hammer and filler work sprayed another coat of epoxy and two coats of G2 poly primer:

Now to guide coat and block sand until nice and straight. Still need to get the doors, fenders and hood done so I can reassemble and test fit.

Here is the Dash freshly painted in Hot Rod Flatz Single Stage Urethane:

Here is the trunk sprayed with Zolatone Medusa Gray. This is the first time I have tried this product:

Sprayed some color and clear today.

First time using the SPI's MS clear and it really laid down nicely. I probably could have turned the fluid out another turn but I was afraid I would run it.

Great progress. It is amazing just how much filler people will use when they have no idea what they are doing. I also did this to my poor 1970 Camaro. I am taking it apart to do it "right" this time. I have nowhere near that amount of filler in my quarters but they do need some love.

Keep at it,
Brent

Nice project, everything's looks great. How do you like the ms clear compared to the universal?keep up great work.take care Joe

To be honest I have not shot the Universal Clear yet (sorry Barry) since I was using Diamont products all available locally. Decided to try the MS first because I had heard nothing but good things about it. So far I like the MS a lot but I can see why guys would go with the Universal first and then flow coat with the MS.
I will try that procedure next time as well.

Reinstalled the engine and transmission while I still have the fenders off. This not running when I got it and many things are missing or damaged so its like a puzzle being put together.

Shot the color on the doors and laid them inside the car for now while I wait on the hinges.

Dash going in:

The reassembly on the dash is gong quite slowly due to all the electrical problems. Every wiring harness on this car has had wires cut, spliced, added in, etc.

After working on this car I can definitely say MOPARs are better built. Everything on this Buick is cheap plastic and extremely fragile. Not to say I don't like the classic GM cars because I do but my observation having done Ford, Mopars and a Buick is that the GM lines aren't as well built. Okay, now you GM guys can flame me if you choose but it is just MHO.

GM's suck  .. Yeah you heard us... They suck, for all you bowtie boyz :p

Well I was going to say nice work, BUT seeing that you are bashing GM.....lol

Mopars better built???? At least that GM car has a frame, there aren't many 65 mopar convertibles left to restore-with unibody construction they were rotting away a lot sooner than the GM's of that era.
