1986 T-Bird

Rusty Gillis
I remember seeing pictures of the T-Bird with this grille and ground affects when they were new and thinking it looked cool. I found this on ebay a few years ago and it was only about 30 miles away so I bought it. I started doing the bodywork than lost interest and it has been sitting outside for a couple of years. My other projects require a lot more work and money to finish so I thought I would finish this.

This is how it looked when I got it.

Brian will have a little rust repair

I sanded it down and primed it a couple of years ago

What is that grille? I am totally confused, cant figure out if that is just a bad view of it is some sort of abortion of the aftermarket?

I think that's a Kolb American package (sold for less than $700). Popular Mechanics covered it in the June 1986 issue (page 78):

Ain't this interweb pipes thingy great?

Thanks I had no idea who made the kit. The T-Bird was bought new in Daytona and I bought it from the second owner who did not have it very long. It is not a turbo 4 it has a V6 and auto that has to come out.

I also have a 1988 GTC Lincoln like the one in the article that I bought new. The only problem is it was hit from the side and the interior is gone so it would cost twice as much as it's worth to fix it.

My Thunderbird has been overlooked to long so I decided to work on it today. I spent the afternoon working on something you will never see the front and rear bumper support

I cleaned them up and sprayed a couple coats of SPI epoxy

Nice job Rusty!

I've got a bird of my own that I'm (very slowly) bringing back to life.

I remember seeing those grills around once or twice. An interesting piece.

Today I sanded and epoxy primed the front and rear bumper

The front bumper will require a lot of sanding and priming
