2.1 production clear used as midcoat/flake carrier- when is it ok to sand?

next day, light pressure, 320 dry would probably work fine. I'm guessing you just want to knock it down some before the next stage of clear or candy?

Normally when people do this they say they reduce the clear around 25% also, I hear this quit often but keep in mind I'm not a custom painter, so others can advise you better.

I have with Universal when used as a carrier reduced it 50% one time to add peal to a new black vette and reduced a 100% to add peals to a new black Nissan truck.
Seemed to work good.

Like Bob said sand next day or no sooner then 4-6 hours.

thanks Barry, the 2100 shoots very nicely. I had to bury some flake and got no solvent pop what so ever.

Question after I sand the next day should I wait another day for the 2100 to off gas before I continue with more a/b work?

thanks Barry, another thing at what point can you put too much on? I'm headed onto my 3rd session (2 coats per sessions) and was wondering what the hazards are?

320 would be good to sand if your gonna Spray other transparent colors over it(Kandies), if your gonna use any kind of base patterns, tape out, graphics then you would be better off going with 400-600:cool:

Yup, I've tested Barry's 320 recomendation for dry sanding between clear applications and seen no problems, 600 for anything that will get basecoat applied.

320 is too coarse to airbrush over plus the scratches are tough to get really clean. they tend to hold dirt. if you are airbrushing then we use 600 here. 800 will work too. as form said 1000 is nice but i have had adhesion issues in the past when i went as high as that.

thanks guys, so far I've been running tests with 400 and 600. My vote is for 600 since I am sanding irregular surfaces.

p600 or p800 wet followed by a scotchbrite.. anything below 6 is too coarse...anything above 800 is asking for adhesion issues.

Alright guys I called yesterday and spoke with a gentleman at SPI (Alan?) and asked what the recoat window is for the 2.1 in order to skip the sanding step. He'd said within 24 hours is a good time.

Reason I asked is because there are times when I can't bury my flake deep enough (irregular surfaces) or temps are dropping too drastically.

What are your guys' thoughts on shooting over clear without sanding? Should I reduce the 2nd session for more bite? Is there an optimal window, say in the 16-24 hour window?

Ask Barry. I've sprayed without sanding 24 hrs between applications and never had any problems but I wouldn't consider going beyond that. When you say irregular surfaces what do you mean? Highly textured surfaces or just odd shapes with a smooth surface?

doesnt matter on the surface... flat or curved piece.. flake doesnt usually bury in the first session.

Spoke to Barry and he recommended I start in asap. I would have been able to bury the flake but it was starting to get cold and dark. The flake I was shooting was ultra and micro flake mixed. Came out just fine after spraying a second session. Passed a good tape test.

thanks guys
