Correct, he didn't say you can't tack off before spraying your 1st coat of finished paint. It can also be used on your air hose.

Yeah, I had realized I had been forgetting to wipe off the hose between coats and that was likely contributing to the problem. Did not know that I could be using a track cloth between coats though. Was afraid the paint was still too tacky and I would make a mess.

Let's just say you try to tack single stage once and you'll never do it again.
