3rd time is the charm for clearcoat...

I sprayed Universal today for the third time and finally got it to lay down enough to work it out correctly. I sprayed 3 coats the first time, but had lots of peel and dry spray so I sanded that with 600 wet and tried it again. I put down 3 more coats but still had peel and was never able to work it enough to get rid of the peel and not have shadows of the peel and micro scratches where I sanded so heavily. Today, I put on 2 good, wet coats and it flowed out real nice (for me anyway!!) and I really think I can cut out the nibs and trash and buff it correctly.

I followed lots of advice from this forum to improve. I had some sand throughs and scuffed places that needed to be touched up and I followed Jim's advice about using heavily reduced clear as an intercoat before I blended out the basecoat and it worked great...can't hardly tell where the spots were at. I also upped the air pressure on my Finex 3000 to 30 pounds through the trigger pull and worked hard on the flow adjustment. As I sprayed, I kept thinking about what I have seen on here about it looking slick right out of the gun and tried to spray each panel as wet as I could. I also took Jim's advice about using a slower activator...I mixed slow and normal 50/50 and left the heat on all night so it was about 72 degrees when I sprayed. I made my weekly call to Barry and he again gave me some good pointers.

I had tried a palm DA with soft interface pad before and got pig tails...mainly because I was trying to use 800 disks to cut all that peel and never got them sanded out. I bought some Trizact 1500 but I am a little afraid to use them because of the pig tail problem. I am thinking maybe 1500 wet and then 2000 by hand before I buff with the Presta system that Barry recommended.

I will post more pictures when I get it through...just wanted to give everyone an update since so many folks had given me help.

Good to hear you tried it again and got the results you were after! Sand by hand if the DA isn't working for you, no sense creating more problems. Make sure to keep everything really clean during the sanding and buffing.
