Yes in most states it's illegal to remove or reattach the VIN tag obviously because of car theft issues. Years ago I wanted to tag my 1959 Thunderbird in Kansas. It had not been tagged for about 15+ years and did not run and was sitting in my garage. That state required the car be inspected by the state police first. The cop that came out got all bent out of shape when he went to check the VIN and I said oh wait a minute and then handed the tag to to him.

I had removed it years ago when I painted the door jams. The car had been painted several times before that including the classic "Let's start spraying paint without any preparation" so the VIN tag had several layers of paint on it and I wanted to attempt to restore the tag before I reattached it. Found by soaking it in Ammonia for several days the paint softened up and came off without damaging the markings on the VIN tag.

Finally I told the cop if I was stealing a car and risking a felony conviction for car theft why would I steal something worth so little AND call the police to look at it? Why not steal an expensive and valuable car like a Corvette or something? He started mumbling about it's illegal to remove VIN tags and reattach them so he really should not approve the car. But I guess after looking at the situation he did realize there was no criminal intent and I got my registration.

Funny thing is that VIN tag is still loose and in the glove box of that old T-Bird! I need specific rivets and I think they are available but I have never got back to that project yet!

In this part of Texas VIN inspections can be a nightmare. I won’t touch an out of state car with a suspect VIN tag. It’s radioactive for me…

Make sure you source the original style rivets when you reinstall the VIN tag. Rosette rivets can be found on eBay.

Original rivets yes, and I would suggest you get them while they are still available.

I took it off because the shell was being acid dipped and the company doing the dipping warned that VIN and Cowl tags are aluminum and would dissolve.

"a person who repairs such vehicle or part, if the removal, obliteration, tampering, or alteration is reasonably necessary for the repair"

And I put it back on with correct rivets.
So I think I'm good.

In Washington state--it is the Washington State Patrol that makes determinations about VIN stampings on frames and tags, removal who witnesses reinstallation, etc....... It's their call by legislation...........................I'd make damn sure what is the frame stamping is the right number on any existing WA state title. What has been referenced above with Cornell University Law School is federal for cars/trucks to be sold in the USA for interstate commerce or export--not operated nor licensed--that falls into state statutes. Each state can augment or enforce what they want for licensing a car or truck in their state. Any coastal state has lots of chop shops and containerized export shipping crime for auto theft so such usually have in stricter laws concerning VINS.

Dean, I'd say you are just fine! Sometimes the "internet" makes a bigger deal out of things than it needs to be.

I almost had a fully restored 57 Belair confiscated by the VIN inspectors in Dallas. Another friend had to pull his engine and leave it behind during a VIN inspection. These guys are ruthless and ignorant, a very bad combination…. The title transfer for my 59 Apache was held up for six months because the Arkansas title used CHV abbreviation for the manufacturer instead of CHEV…

You can’t make this chit up….

I'm going to attempt to put carpet in myself. Got a kit from ACC, which Mike the upholstery guy recommended.
He gave me a quart of Weldwood Landau glue to use.
Bought an 1.8 tip HF gun for shooting the glue. Seems to be ok.

Gun setup for shooting "snot" is way different than paint, but got it dialed in good enough.

Starting to lay down the Jute. Kinda fun, or maybe just a glue buzz . . .

Between the Hushmat, Jute, and carpet, should be quiet inside.

Very nice to have new metal and solid SPI epoxy to put it all down on.

So what are your HF fun settings for spraying the Weldwood Landau glue?
I probably wasted 1/4 cup of glue futzing with the settings.
Fan down to a circle and then out for about a 4-5 inch fan.
Fluid out about 3 1/2 turns, just until fan was consistent and glue was laying down "threads."
35 PSI.

Good information there, thanks for sharing. I too am going to sacrifice a HF gun. I'll be curious how much time it takes for the Weldwood Landau glue to set up on the needle and cap before it becomes unable to spray during a session of usage.

Funny. Mike never cleans his glue gun. Just grabs it and shoots. Never a problem. Amazing.
 
I worked at an interior shop for a little bit when I was in highschool. I would do maybe 2 or 3 headliners a week and we had a siphon gun that had glue in it...Never cleaned it, just refilled it. Pull the glue booger off the tip before spraying and go after it.
