76 Trans Am Endura Bumper Refinish

T

TransAm_Stan

So I go to my local body shop & they tell me the process they would use to refinish an endura bumper. It goes something like this...

Remove paint 220 grit or /and media blast
fix gouges with Kent EP using 3M 06396 adhesion promoter
Prime with Medallion RS-515 Fill & flex primer
wet sand with 1500
Seal with PPG DAS3025
Paint
PPG DC2000 flex clear

From what I read on this forum this is the process that is recommended...

Mechanical or media blast strip
Clean with waterborne wax and grease remover
Fix holes/gauges with Kent EP
Clean with waterborne W&G with scuffing paste (dont know what scuffing paste is)
prime 2 coats Epoxy primer
Fix light cosmetic repairs with flexible polyester glaze
sand
re-prime with Epoxy
paint
Top Coat

Reason I ask is that I already have several SPI products that would cut down on my cash outlay.

Questions:

Kent EP. Is the adhesion promoter needed?

Fill me in on the scuffing paste. Best one to buy?

Best flexible polyester glaze to purchase?

Is the DC2000 flex clear needed? (I am assuming so)

Any other advice in the refinishing of this bumper?

Thanks in advance for the comments. I eagerly await the pro's comments!

This Bumper is keeping me awake at nights!

Regards,

Stan

The adhesion promoter on this bumper is not required and I would not use, as the epoxy will have a stronger bite without it.
Why waste money on a flex clear??? The Universal is flexible to 4" thick.
Normal production clears are of course brittle but to be honest, flex is still a waste of money and that is why I wont make it.

Don't lose sleep, this is one of the easiest bumpers to work on.

Process you mentioned sounds ok to me although i am not familiar with the products i did a 70 judge 2 yr ago this was my process
Blast with med crushed glass
Da w 120
Blew clean air wiped down w pre clean let sit 24 hrs
All repair done w valvoline ashland bumper rep products
Primed with spies hecker 85902k with their flex additive multiple times to my knowledge no problems yet i used no adpro

This was before spi so i would think if i did another it would be all epoxy now because to my knowledge there is nothing more flexible that remains that way forever

I forgot to mention i didnt use flex clear i was always under the impression flexative just slows cure to allow installation of plastic flexible parts i might be wrong im sure someone else will chime in

Thanks for the replies gents!

Barry: I was speaking of the adhesion promoter under the Kent EP only. I realize (from reading on this forum) that no adhesion promoter is needed under the SPI Epoxy.

I do have some 4000 clear. I will use that in place of the PPG Flex clear.

Amended process:

Mechanical and/or media blast strip
Clean with waterborne wax and grease remover
Fix holes/gauges with Kent EP
Clean with waterborne W&G
prime 2 coats Epoxy primer
Fix light cosmetic repairs with flexible polyester glaze
Wet sand 600
re-prime with Epoxy
wet sand 600
paint
Universal clear 4000

Any other advice is appreciated !

Stan

Sounds real good to me, if any epoxy needs an adpro for sticking to this bumper, it is a useless epoxy.
