well, not me! im not in my right mind. anyways, cant believe I took this one on, but it has been quite a journey and learned a lot on metal forming. I had a pretty good collection of pics of this one, but my computer crashed a while ago and I lost the (re)build pictures.
this here car belongs to a really awesome old hippie lady. believe it or not, it is in excellent mechanical condition. the body.....not so excellent. except for the front fenders, its new sheetmetal from the bodyline down all the way around. it was undercoated quite some time ago. the undercoat was so thick it didn't creep down into the nooks and crannies where the rust formed and took off from there.behind the rear tires on the QP's there really wasn't anything but undercoating in the form of QP's.
there is absolutely no aftermarket body panels( imagine that!!) for pacers, so i had to do quite a bit of metal shaping. the only metal forming tools i owned when i started are hammers and dollies. i had a friend make me up a beater bag, which worked excellent( at least i think it did. a professional metal shaper would prolly say otherwise). i also happened across a 1/2" thick chunk of steel that i bolted onto a bench for beating on, used wood blocks i shaped with different curvatures, even the floor in the shop occasionally. oh....plus a crapload of patience! inner and outer rockers and floorboards are fresh, too. cant believe the subframe is in pretty good shape, too.
i gotta say, after doin the rear corners i may have an idea of what its like to bang out a motorcycle gas tank( or a fish bowl!)! nope, the metalwork wasn't all perfect- NOTHING close to what i see on here happening down in Fla at gillis performance( LOVE that work and would love to come work there, even if its just sweepin the floors!!). but it worked!! there actually isn't that much body filler on "pearl the pacer" in my opinion. im not the greatest at applyin it(yet) so a lot ended up being sanded off.

this is after epoxy primer, 2 coats of featherfill, and almost done blocking and now breaktime! hopin some 2k primer tonight, sand tomorrow, and paint Saturday. colors gonna be the same as the rims topped with universal clear.

ok, for some reason i cant upload the other pics, but ill get more

Pacers are classic and very hipster. They have so much glass they look like the Popemobile.

gonna be metallic cobalt blue like the rims. the lady wanted me to shoot some flowers(hippie style) of different sizes with a magenta flake here and there on it. I suggested lookin for a vinyl graphic place to have em made from vinyl.
heres a pretty awesome pacer. pretty cool to see dad and daughter build this one up:

and here her dads pacer at the dragstrip:

welp, getting a lil tedious on black sanding, but I think im satisfied enough now to pull all the paper off, remask, set up the paint booth, and get some sealer and color on her toady!View attachment 3513View attachment 3514

doors are hangin in the garage...err...paint booth already. I painted the hood and latch a while ago. think im glad I did as I don't have the room for hangin all these parts. hopin everything all looks good and matches when painted.002.jpg

man it feels good to finally have this thing in color!!! now all that's left is everything that isn't done, like get doors on, milk crates....errr...seats back in.... all that stuff customers seem to like.
facts about pacers:
37% of surface area is glass.

Original Promotional Tag lines: ◦"You only ride like a Pacer if you're wide like a Pacer."
◦"Small was never this wide."
◦"The first wide small car."
( there really is quite a bit of room in there!"

The passenger's side door was intentionally designed 4 inches longer than the driver's side door, to encourage backseat riders to enter the vehicle on the curb side

Original plans for design included a rotary Wankel engine but these plans were dropped at the last minute.

Pacer shape inspired by a football: "I heard that in an interview with [Teague], he said he got the inspiration for the Pacer's unique shape while watching a football game and seeing a long spiral throw, observing how aerodynamically the football sliced though the air. That's why it kind of bows out from the bottom up- a bit like a football."

Pacer Carjacking? "1996 -- In January in Fremont, Calif., a carjacker described as 5-foot-8, about 170 pounds, yanked Cecilia Laus, 54, out of her car and drove off, leaving the woman shaken and also bewildered, since the car was a 1976 AMC Pacer." Of course, we Pacer enthusiasts know better than to be bewildered at such a story

believe it or not, after seeing the drag racing pacer and checkin out the mopacer site and doin some surfin, the owners hubby was askin if it would be possible to drop a built up ford 302 in there.
"how deeps your pockets?" is all I could reply. his wheels were, and prolly still are, spinnin!!

Be a pretty cool place to BOLT IN a hot 360 or 401!
But, I guess that's just me...I really like to see engines stay with the make.
The car looks good!
You have done a nice job.
The poor old Pacer never got much luv, but it's kind of funny how they resemble a lot of small cars built in the last few decades.

all buffed up and almost ready to go! I just love universal clear!!!
unfortunately I found bad motor mounts and have to replace me. but the good news is I found aftermarket replacements that are the right ones. no having to rework them!! kind of pricey, but the rubbers are so shot the fan was hittin the shroud. just glad it wasn't hittin the radiator!
