A few questions on cut and buff

While waiting on another weather window I have been sanding out my last spray job and have a couple questions before moving on to buff and polish

1 I used the assilex/buflex papers for most of the car. However before landing there I tried a few different papers/methods starting on the roof. Sunmight, wet and dry, and another brand I forget who, before settling on the eagle stuff dry. I went up to 2500 with sunmight then 3000 buflex and finished with trizact 8000 wet. I did a quick wool pad with 3d 500 to see how it looked and I'm happy with the shine but I noticed a few scratches. I was a stickler for sanding each grit in a different direction. So based on the scratch direction it is either the 2500 or the 1500 where I left scratches. Now I am wondering if this is because the sunmight cut deeper and if I my issue is just here or on other parts of the car that I did completely in eagle. I spent a lot of time checking each grit with a light for removal of prior grit scratch but these made it past me. when you get this, how far back do you step? Go back to 2000, 2500, 3000, spend more time with wool?

2 I worked each git step when sanding . knock off peel high spots and dust nibs with 600. Flatten orange peel with 800 until about 70-80% gone. Then 1000,1200,1500,2000,2500,3000 then trizact 8000 wet. doing this much sanding, is it still advisable to go wool pad then black foam with the 3d 500/520 system, or do I skip wool pad. I'm just wondering if the wool step is a pro or a con since the possibility to hit and edge and burn through (yes I am taping) is higher here.

3 When buffing particularly with the wool pad will areas like these trim holes in flat panels be an issue for burn through and if so how do you protect them?

I have never burned through a trim hole.

I think you are using too many grits.

1000, 1500 Assilex, 2500 Buflex, 8000 Trizact and done. 510 or 500 on a wool pad, then polish. The JimC method….

Thanks, Ok I guess Ill step back to 2500 to get the scratches out and redo Trizact

are you hand sanding these grits with wet/dry or is this all with a da? you mentioned each sanding direction so i assume hand sanding? if so you may be better off going all those grits. its alot of sanding to do by hand an to be honest, i dont have much experience color sanding clear by hand with wet/dry so i cant offer much. my process is just what don posted but thats all da. 1000 & 1500 are dry with sunmight finishing film then blue bufflex which is 2500 then 8000 if the clear is over 2 days old otherwise i stop at 2500. always use wool first. dont skip that step.

Spend a little extra time with the 1200 and 1500 to get rid of the 1000 grit scratches, especially closer to the edges. And use a wool pad for the first compound. You can get away with using a foam compounding pad first, but you have to really be diligent sanding to ensure every bit of each of the previous grit scratches are removed and you have to work the foam pad more than you would a wool pad.

What wool pad is it that you guys like here? The Lake Country? Does 3D have a wool pad? I thought I remember reading that IDK.

Thanks all. Ok dont skip wool. I have the yellow 3d 8" wool pad and some 1-3" wool pads that came with my spta mini polisher. Next time I'll get the tape closer to the edges. If I notice it after buffing I guess I can put it closer and try to blend it in some with some 2500 then rebuff. Yes I am hand sanding each step, and da on the 8000 wet. My AirAdvantage DA just craped out on me after only about 2 hours of use. So using a cheapo one until I can figure that out. I went back to the roof and got the scratches out with some patience with buflex 2500. They were only on one side of the roof so I guess I was more diligent on the other side.

Will the Chemical Guys V32 compound be as effective on wool as this other compound everyone is talking about ?

I hate hand sanding and want to get to more machine sanding.

In my experience not even close. I know that stuff has its fans but I am not one of them.

I see hardly any cut with it either, even with wool but had wondered if it was just me. I think I’m going to go back to wool and try the compound you like.
