Affordable red pearl basecoat

Does anyone have a recommendation for an affordable basecoats? I've been looking at thecoatingstore, TCP restoration shop urethane base, Speedokote, ****$***** and Eastwood. I have a 2004 Toyota tundra 3Q3 Salsa Red Pearl which is my daily driver and I want it to have a fresh basecoat and SPI universal clear, and SPI epoxy primer in black or red undecided. I know reds and pearls make basecoat expensive. I contacted Chad and was quoted $1358 for an undercoat and base from motorbase. I am looking for a basecoat that is affordable since the truck is 20 years old and I know it deserves more than a maaco urethane plus integrated clear paint job.

Cheaper paints generally have poor coverage and require more coats for coverage. It’s false economy to buy cheap base.

Urekem might be worth a look. Some members here use it.

Use grey epoxy. That is a good shade for most reds, including the color of your truck. Black would be a mistake. Will take 2X minimum the amount of coats of base to get coverage. You could use red oxide epoxy but most of the time grey is a better choice.
Keep in mind that Urechem does not have OEM formulations AFAIK. So you will have something that doesn't match the jambs underhood etc unless you paint them as well. Also if you ever sell it, having a non oem color on there may hurt the resale or it may not. IDK. Just something to consider.

This one would be reasonably close.

Your color is just a regular metallic base. It's not a 3 stage pearl. I don't know why Chad quoted you on an undercoat as well as the base. All you would need is the base. A neutral grey undercoat would work fine. Why I said go with the SPI grey epoxy.

Thank you for the information. I know mine is a 2 stage, but I didn't question the quote, knowing this motorbase is $835 a gallon. Since urechem doesn't have the oem AFAIK do you think the maroon mica pearl would be better than the Toyota 3Q3 option on urechem’s website?

If you don't see the OEM color in their section feel free to give them a call and see if it can be mixed up.

Look into urekem. Ive sprayed numerous basecoats and candies from them with great results

I did some reading on there web page...They want/suggest you to use all their materials for project...Example, it is highly encouraged you use our primer before applying basecoats. Our basecoats, may/can attack "others' " primers...Something to that nature..
Also, how can they sell a gallon of basecoat the OP is looking at for 280 a gallon?..

Any company is going to say that. Sorry I have sprayed spi clears and primers with urekem basecoats for the last 8 years or so.

Just so you know I'm not full of shit. There is urekem paint all over in my cabinet. Now I have never painted a car with it. But plenty of golf carts and motorcycles.

Awesome, thank you..You did not need to do that.(send pic).Do you or would you use SPI reducer with the Urechem Urethane basecoats?

Personally I would order a quart of the base and do a spray out on an old fender. Make sure it performs up to your likings.

Chad got back to me, Wanda base is $484 for a gallon, Motorbase is $835 for a gallon and urechem is $387 for 6 quarts. I am dead set on SPI gray epoxy primer, SPI reducer and SPI universal clear. Everyone thank you for the recommendations and I'm just excited to bring my trucks paint back to life

For the price. Wanda is a great covering base. I've only used it on one project but I wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

When comparing price make sure to compare ready to spray. Wanda is 2:1 and Motobase is 1:1 as far as I know. It makes a difference. So you get 1.5 gallons ready to spray with Wanda and 2 gallons ready to spray with Motobase.

For those prices I would probably go with Wanda. Just my personal opinion. True a gallon is 6 quarts sprayable vs 8 quarts sprayable but still a significant savings while still a high quality basecoat. And as stated some people reduce Wanda a bit more than 2:1 so possibly more than 6 quarts sprayable depending on your ratio.
