Another Hobby Air/ Fresh Air question.

So I’ve done a search and read all the archived threads on the subject. Still have a couple questions. 1) Is there a better hood you can get and use besides the big Tyvek looking hood that comes with them.
2) I’m assuming the hoods with the belt mounted organic filter and blower would not be good?
3) Can a hood like a 3m versaflo be converted to use with the hobby air type system?
Have a home made booth and need something better than a mask.

I used a supplied air hood at a previous employer, the biggest detractors was the gargantuan hose that had to be dragged along, and it’s tendency to curl / move in an opposite direction from the compressed air hose. So yes, quite the trip factor. In my shop I opted for the SATA Vision 2000 hood and belt mounted filter. One supply hose, and the plus side is my air system uses a refrigerant dryer so it’s built in air conditioning for those hot sweaty days. If you were closer I’d say come try it out….

The Sata uses compressed air correct?
I have used a belt mounted filter welding helmet. I just figured anything like that would pull overspray into the filter and be bad? I’m pretty ignorant about these. I’m a hobby guy but want to know what I’m buying.

The Sata uses compressed air and muSt use a charcoal filter to eliminate any hydrocarbons. Also has a carbon dioxide detector in the hood. I’ll add, I’m a tight bastard and waited about two years to find a used (new in the box) for cheap.

I guess that’s what I don’t understand about a unit like the 3m versaflo. I don’t see where it uses compressed air, maybe I’m missing something. Has a filter on the belt.

What type compressor do you use ? Do you have a separate compressor dedicated for the hood or filter the same one you paint with? I’ve read some about people using oilless compressors.

Looks like the Versa flow 800 is a self contained unit driven by a rechargeable battery. Has several types of filters available to match your needs. It basically filters the contaminated air instead of supplying fresh air.

Kinda what I thought. Just didn’t know how good a filter would be in a homemade booth sucking in heavily contaminated air.
Been reading on the Sata units. They are very expensive and the charcoal filter is expensive too. I don’t know what to do, I know the hobby air type system will make it safe to paint but the bulky hose and hood sucks. The Sata type is nice but very expensive for a guy who paints a few bumper covers and parts here and there.

I have a 33.9 cfm Eaton. It does have an oil bath, oil less are throwaways in my opinion. Anything that uses oil will run the risk of hydrocarbons in the air, hence the carbon filter and Co2 monitor. SATA also specifies finer filtration when using for supplied air, can’t remember all the details but they should have it on their website or tech line.

I use a 3m Versa flow in our booth with our shop compressor air i use a cam air 3 stage desiccant set up on the outside wall of booth and then on the inside run a ultra fine sharpe filter to catch any desiccant particles from break down then last of all a develbiss dad-500 charcoal filter and wall mounted air regulator 3m makes 2 belt mounted regulators one is for high pressure air and the other is for the low pressure sas type oil less compressor you will need the high pressure model this system has worked great for me it does seem to use a fair amount of cfm thou when spraying I run my larger 15 horse compressor

Almost to the point of going the hobby air route. By the time I buy hood, regulator, hose, filters etc it’s big money.
If I did this for a living it would be different.
Guess I’ll deal with the bulky hose and tyvek hood.

Never tried the hood style. Years ago I bought a SurviveAir (spelling?) pump with a half mask, then hooked up a 3M full face instead of the half mask. Separate hose for the mask but no filters needed. Tear offs keep the face lens clean and I have a spectacle kit for the prescription glasses.
Of course the pump needs to be somewhere to take in clean air, some people feed it through a pipe from outside.

Not sure if you saw my previous posts on this topic. I'm happy with my setup, which is about $100.

You do need the compressor supplying the hood to be in fresh air, not pulling in contaminated overspray.
I use a pancake style construction compressor outside of the shop, since my main spraying compressor is in the shop, pulling in contaminated air. It provides ample volume for the hood.

The hood is actually nice to work in, better visibility than googles.

Only downside is two air hoses to deal with while spraying, but it works good.

Yes I saw it. No offense, I just wasn’t sure about how safe it is breathing unfiltered air from a compressor. May be fine.

It is fil

It IS filtered, the regulator/filter combo does a good job.
Like I said I’m not arguing that it isn’t safe. I just read that hoods like the Sata use a carbon filter to filter the compressor air. Just didn’t know what you were using for air filtration from your pancake compressor?
Does the pancake have any trouble keeping up?

I use the hobby style. I find no issues except when I did something stupid. I dragged the corrugated hose across a wet quarter panel. My first full body spray, so not bad. I set the pump up inside the house.

This is what I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/Supplied-Respirator-Mask-Mask-Connection-Breathing/dp/B01MU2Z17Z/

Includes a belt to wear it.

It includes " Air humidifier, air filter and oil-water separator"

The pancake compressor runs almost constantly but keeps up. There is noticeable air flow in the hood.
