Are strainers needed ??

Even with primers you will be glad you strained it when you find a dry chunk in the strainer. It would have got stuck in the gun while spraying if not strained.

It takes me hours to get everything as optimal as possible to spray paint. Last thing I want is to be right in the middle of finally spraying and have the gun clog up.
Not much at Harbor Freight is good, but I'll use their strainers all day vs. nothing.

You have to consider that Barry has taken in a lot of paint fumes over the years, sometimes this can cloud the judgement.

Anything that is poured into my paint cup is poured through a strainer.
