Looking to buy a quality base coat gun to shoot mostly solids, some metallic. Price range up to $1,200. Recommendations please.
Thanks in advance.

I have a new #1061564 SATA X5500 RP 1.3 "I" nozzle, Non- digital listed on eBay for $780. I ordered it in for a customer that changed mind mid-order.

I've used Sata HVLP's for basecoat for almost 25 years. You can't go wrong with a Sata HVLP x5500 1.3 O nozzle (conventional pattern) I have not used the I pattern but from what I understand sprays more like an Iwata. The HVLP Sata's don't spray clear well but they will spray any metallic, or pearl as good as anything out there. And they last. They don't have a million plastic pieces and gaskets like Devilbiss.

If you are doing a solid color then the Sata RP would be fine. Last two jobs I had were solid colors that I used bc/cc and I used my Sata RP for both. I have multiple needle nozzles sets for the RP and I like spraying base with the 1.2 needle/nozzle set. If you were going to use an RP for base I would get the 1.2 needle nozzle set along with the 1.3 to spray clear with.

I have a Sata Solv-1500 1.4 HVLP the blue gun and i's for base only. It's Sata's lower priced gun .Plus a very old DeVibiss 501 HVLP made in France ,still works great and hardly no plastic pieces

I know it's scoffed at,but, the 3M performance gun works really well. It's one gun but a lot of interchangeable heads. Huge 12in fan.

Personally, I think your preferred style of spraying comes into play here. I tend to spray a bit slower and find the SATA guns that I tried in the past put out a lot more paint with a larger fan size, thus requiring me to move a bit faster. Granted, I could have adjusted to that over time but found I prefer the slower more deliberate style of painting. Hence, I use the LPH Silver Cap 1.4 tip for epoxy primer, base and clear.

Depends what material you are spraying. National rule solvent, low voc solvent or waterborne. I had to switch to low voc solvent back in 2010. Some of it sprays like sand with an hvlp.

I was using a sata 1500 rp until switching to water in Feb. I use a sagola 4600 now.
Clear I use an Iwata ws400.

I'm thinking about selling some guns.

DV1 basecoat gun sprays basecoat pretty effortlessly and includes multiple tip sizes. Not sure exactly what materials your using, your style etc so that’s an ez setup to go with as it covers most scenarios. My personal favorite are iwata lph’s but they don’t suit everyone. And Sagola 4600’s are great guns as well.

Don't forget about the Devilbiss FLG-5 :D
