best clear for an overall

440A-body

Looking for some advice on which clear will perform the best for me. I am going to repaint my 1992 Dodge extended cab W250 Cummins, and since it is a two tone I want to put it back that way. Now the problem is that it sits outside about 85-90% of the time, including through the winter. I am looking for something that I can cut and buff, but has excellent UV protection for longevity. This will be a full on repaint to include door jambs, underhood, cowl area, and anything that can be painted will be. Thanks for adivce.

Universal Clear. But call Barry at tech line. Number's on website. Good luck!

If you are going to spray the entire truck in one shot, you'll want a slow activator, I'm sure any clear would work. Do you plan on buffing right away or waiting some time? If you buff right away, I'm sure any clear would work, if you are going to delay buffing, then I am told Universal is the way to go.

I will probably spray the whole thing at one time, since it is a silver, and dark blue metallic. I plan on following the perfect paint job instructions, and will let it set for a week, sand, re-clear, then wait to cut and buff for after a week. Winter is long here in North Dakota so time is kinda on my side.

Is it ready to spray? Because you need to make your material choice depending on ambient conditions.

Well aware of that. It is going to be a winter project, so time is not important. The only difference is I will not be able to sit it outside in the sun. It will have to set in a heated shop.

I will comment on the universal, I waited 6 months to buff the wagon I did because it sat at the upholstery shop. It still buffed really nice after waiting that long I was surprised.

Waited two years to start sanding and buffing sons 91 bmw. Three coats of Universal. Sanded the rear deck lid with 1200 then 1500. Had to work it a little but buffed out. Will probably finish with 2000 just to make it easier on myself. If long term buffing is the plan - UNIVERSAL CLEAR without question!

Two years my god lol, Don't think I could wait that long. I always finish to 3000, saves time and I think it just looks better.

universal definitely buys you time especially with no sun. some complain it doesnt harden fast enough, it has to get uv rays to harden it up real good... or you can just add accelerator.

It was a daily driver for a year or so after we painted it. Looked good off the gun. Been off the road for a year. Just started messing with it just to see how good it could get. Been so busy have only had time to do rear deck lid. I've been meaning to stop procrastinating but haven't gotten around to it yet!
