About 15 to 25 years ago?? Dont remember. I started making my own thread freer for frozen bolts.
I mixed about half auto trans fluid and acetone, and I felt no other could hold a candle to my mix.

I had a pair of plyers may have had 20 years or so and could not find them well today saw them in the garbage rusted shut.
Wife had them in her gardening cart.

So problem one I had no acetone so mixed 50 % ATF and 50% spi 885.
Rust is disappearing and freed up in less than 5 minutes. It was solid scale before soaking.
Will leave overnight but looks to act faster.

Nice! Gotta use what you got on hand right? Being in a garage/shop environment I always have cases of some sort of penetrant around to use but certain things need a good soak. I usually have a batch of atf/diesel kicking around. I use it to free up engines. I’m not sure I could bring myself to use my reducer! Hahaha but if it works it works. Vinegar also eats up rust pretty good but I’m sure you know that. Good for saving those pliers. Everyone just throws things away these days.

It's about 16 or so hours later and not seeing a lot of difference.
I was impressed at first at the speed it cleaned but now wonder if it works as well as acetone with ATF.
This was a poor test as nothing to compare with and this is old metal and very heavy.
I will leave plyers in another week and see what happens but they are usable now so
All is fine.
