black looks brown in the sun

i painted a car restoration shop jet black in sections,i took out in the sun the other day and i can see a brown tint on the last section i did,

my first paint session i used the jet black with spi reducer and spi universal clear, looks good and black

my second paint session the parts have a brown tint in the sun, i used a new batch of the jet black, omni reducer and spi low voc universal clear.

checking to see if any one here can figure out the problem

What brand is restoration shop-Summit Racing? Eastwood? I'd call the color supplier.

I seem to recall some old comments by Barry when he used to sell black basecoat. A cheap reducer, and I especially remember Omni being named there, will cause the black to appear brown. I believe the explanation went on to say that the lower-grade reducer contains more acetone, which will absorb water, turning the black a shade of brown.

Did I get it correct?

humidity, moisture and all that can play with black. i will never shoot black on a humid or rainy day. restoration shop paint aint exactly the greatest stuff either. it may be more prone to that.

i think your gonna find the omni to be the big factor. cheap paint is one thing but mix in cheap reducer and your asking for it.

I wouldn't put it past them to use the wrong black in the mix...I don't know what restoration shop is..or what their formula is for "jet black". Could just be a black toner. In that case it could be a variation in the batch..which is common on cheap brands. Top all that off with lower grade reducer...

Do you have any of the "new" mix left in the can unreduced? If you do put some on a stick and check it outside in the sun.

If you have any paint left over shoot a test panel using the spi reducer and compare-so you know if that's the problem or if the color was just made wrong.

Ass-u-ming the paint is good quality, here are some things that can cause problems.

Black :

Low grade reducer.
Over reducing.
Too fast reducer.
moisture in lines or on floor or in air (excessive)
Dry spraying.
Not enough coats for hiding.
Too high air pressure.

How to spray black:
if 70 deg's use next slower reducer like 885.
Spray first coat like you would last coat of clear, even and slick.
Walk away for 60 minutes, then spray second.
60 more minutes spray third coat.
Let set over night, always with black and then clear.
Activating black is one of the very best things you can also do.

A foot note--Black is different then any other color, it dries different.

i have been on the band waggon at 50% but i am now 100%, love the universal clear wich i have been using for about 5 years now, spi products are some of the best i have used and barrys tech support is the best, getting ready to order more products on monday.
