Can I paint stripes on my Chevelle like it was on originals with bc cc ?

I want to keep the sharp edge where my stripes and the base color meet . This is how the originals were painted and I like better than the buried look. It would be easy to do if I were using lacquer but I cant get it now and am going with a SPI base coat clear coat when I get ready to paint the car.. I had thought that I would clear the base color and buff it out. Then tape and sand for the stripes , paint stripes and clear. I am not sure how the clear would do when I try and pull the tape off, Would I get a sharp edge or would it slowly run over the edge. I guess it would have to be done at just the right time after it is sprayed. I just wonder if it can be done or if you guys would just bury the stripes ?

I've seen plenty of guys base/clear their car, the. Tape off where the stripes go, sand and use single stage. I would perdonaly use a catylized urethane based single stage over a lacquer for better durablilty

Also it all depends on the look you want. I've done a few and I bury them

What color are the stripes? I'd paint the car, buff it out like you plan, mask, scuff with a grey scotchbrite and scuff-paste and shoot the stripes in singlestage urethane. This will give it a more correct look.

OJ'd86 that color on the chevelle decklid looks really nice!

I will use single stage on the stripes. That sounds like it would be the best way to go and stay with the original look.. I should be able to shoot stripes without any problem spots but if I get any dirt can single stage be sanded and buffed , or would I need to sand it all and shoot again ? I know this might be a stupid question but all my painting has been with lacquer and enamels in the old days. Thanks a lot for the information, the stripes have been one of the big things that I have worried about because of what little I know about the systems you guys use now. Thanks again.

Orangejuiced86, thats an awesome decklid. I love the color as well. Has that been buffed or is it right after paint?

That was sanded and buffed. I think I did some spot sanding after that pic was taken but for the most part, thats complete.

I am going to use SPI dark red because it is very close to the cranberry red that was on the car. Original stripes were a off white but most of the guys back then would use pure white when they repainted their cars and I liked the pure white look better myself so that is what I will use when I do the stripes.

SPI singlestage white sure is nice stuff-very clean looking. I can't remember if it's available in quarts but it's really a nice white.

How long before I could tape for stripes using SPI base coat ? How long can I wait to shoot clear on the base ?

If I paint stripes the next day , should I give the stripes time to flash off , remove tape and then clear the whole car ?

Are you still talking about using the single stage for the stripes and not wanting to bury them? I would think that would be after the clear then. Even not trying to bury them is still gonna bury them if you clear over them
.

Since I am not into car shows like I was a few years ago I am thinking more that I will just use bc cc and bury them .I think that would look better and be easier than trying to get the sharp edge I really want to sand and buff to a great finish and the raised edge would probably be a pain.
