Candy intercoat clear versus candy clear

Guys do you have much experience using candy concentrate in something like SPI intercoat clear to do a candy paint job? Here is what I have done and still do but just wondering if I can do it all over. I use candy concentrate in intercoat clear (SPI now but used to use PPG DBC500) and I use that for candying my door jams, cut-ins, etc and then clear. On the outside I use traditional candy clear built up and then regular clear. Has anyone success with candy intercoat clear allover? Does it have the same depth and pop as candy clear? My issue is most clears are getting higher and higher solids so finding a low build clear to make a candy clear out of with candy concentrate is getting harder and harder. Otherwise there is too many mils of paint in the finish.

Just wanted some opinions...

Works just fine, I doubt you would see any difference at all. SPI intercoat rocks IMO. Just make sure to catalyze the basecoat and intercoat for durability-it makes a big difference.

And give it a lot of flash time before your clear is applied-overnight minimum preferred

i have been using spi intercoat with candy concentrate since the spi intercoat was released probably 10 years ago. i never use clearcoat as the binder. that is the old school way to do it. the only company i know of still even producing a urethane style candy is hok. anything else i have used is all done with a basecoat system. in my case, most of my graphics are done with candies so using a urethane doesnt even work. a basecoat is a must for that. piling on 10+ coats of a urethane clear in one session never really sat right with me anyway. can you imagine the solvents being trapped in that lol. with base you can get all you color done, let it sit overnight to completely gas off then clear it. bob is right. always put cat in the base and intercoat. you will also never be able to tell a difference in depth of the final job between a clear and base system. they will look identical.

What ratio are you mixing the SPI intercoat clear and reducer 1:1? And since I typically use HOK Kandy Clear, who do you guys recommend for candy concentrate? HOK, SEM, other?
Thanks, Bart

I mix it 1:1.5 and have used HOK. I've also mixed it 1:2 and never have any problems

what bob said!

you can use any concentrate you want. hok, sem, alsa. i personally use basf carizzma line but on occasion i will use sem or hok if i have it around. they are basically all the same colors from brand to brand. the paint companies dont make any of the dyes. one company makes them and sells them to the paint company. the paint co. just puts it in a can, adds solvent or binders and thats it. hok apple red will be the same color as sem or basf.

done it both with intercoat and a final little dose in the final universal clear, I just believe these candies are getting so popular in concentrates that the only concern is lightfastness of the product, so I would get the depth you want with whatever you want but always add a final layer of clear so the uv protection is in that outside layer.

Well I believe that to be true about any candy even when done the old school way that I'm used to. I did a HOK Kandy Brandywine over gold base on a cobra replica 7-8 years ago. All HOK, ended the Kandy with two coats of clear. Sanded with 800 and recleared with HOK clear (before I started using SPI Universal). The guy parks the car in a car port open on three sides and the side against the wall is now darker than the rest of the car. If you have a candy, you better store in side.
