clear brushed aluminium

Just picked a raw sheet of Brushed aluminium for a kick panel for the back side of a bar. It finger prints real easy and I figured it would be good if I cleared it. has anybody cleared bare aluminium? if so what steps should I take to have a flawless out come. I'm assuming clean with wax and grease remover and spray.

hmm maybe a clear intercoat then regular clear?? i wonder if it is possible

aluminum oxidizes very quickly ...most paint failures on aluminum are due to poor surface prep I have heard that some of the alloy bodied cars are prepped and primed no more than 20 min after.(kent white aka "tinman" tmtechnologies told me this personally)
I would wax grease remove.then scotch brite (red, gray ...whatever matches with the grain with wax grease remover ,then dry scotch brite .then clear and hope for the best

yea, scuff pad soaked in wax and grease remover, than a final wipe with a wiping cloth and w&g remover. Let dry. Tack rag and go for it. Anybody else have any thoughts

There is a product called Sharkhide that claims to adhere to and protect many different kinds of bare metal. I don't know anything about it, but have wondered if it might make a passable adhesion promoter for urethane clear in situations like this.

No 2K urethane clear that I know of is designed specifically to adhere to bare metal.

I can't answer your question except to say "maybe." Best to call Barry and describe the intended application.

I think Barry suggested spraying 5 parts SPI adhesion promoter mixed with 1 part urethane clear activator first then your clear. I haven't tried it yet myself but plan to. I also wondered if sharkhide might work for a tie coat. Alsa is also supposed to have a good clear for aluminum-glisten clear?

I never even thought that the clear would't adhere properly. (Im still pretty green when it comes to the painting world) Im glad I asked before doing it. I did some research on your guys suggestions and I found a product called Diamond clear. made by KBS Coatings. http://www.kbs-coatings.com/diamondfinish-clearcoat.html I have used there black chassis coating products before and were very pleased with them. I didnt know they made any clear products. The company is less than 60 miles from me and they usually have a sales both set up at the local swap meets. I know there is a swap this weekend close to me and if there not there Im sure they will be at the Street Rod Nationals in Kalamazoo MI. in two weeks. Where Im hoping to be selling my sound deadener product. Ill see if I can pick some up.

You've heard of Dynamat. its pretty much the same thing. It comes from the same manufacture. its the same in everyway, except the huge cost. oh! and no logo.

I'd love to hear from Barry if SPI adpro has been successfully tested on anything but plastic parts.
