clear question

Customer wants stripes painted on where there is now tape stripes and does not want

to be able to feel an edge. 2008 Mustang GT convertible: blue metallic with silver

metallic stripes: the stripes go over the hood and front bumper and over the trunk lid,

spoiler and rear bumper. I have measured and removed the stripes and plan to go 3

and 3 on the clear. The rear bumper curves around to the sides and forms the lower

wheel openings. About 2 feet in length of the rear bumper is visible from the side under

the quarter panel. I really don't want to apply 6 coats of clear to this area where it is

not really needed for this job. Other than the additional labor/material (not much) my

concern is if it may create a mismatch to the quarter panel. The hood, trunk lid and

front bumper will have to be cleared complete but I was wondering if I could clear just

the back of the rear bumper to the corners on the first clear session and then clear it

complete on the re-clear. Would it create a problem (wrinkle) at the clear edge since

it will be sanded and thinned before the re-clear? (Sorry if this is confusing) Thanks

No worries about wrinkling if there's a sanded clear edge. You could scuff the complete bumper and just put one coat over the sides and two more where you need the build, sand your stripe areas and just scuff up the sides and shoot your second round of clear. The color won't change but the bumper will probably look better than the quarters when you're done.

Thanks, Bob. I will proceed as you suggest as your advice has always been reliable. I have had clear alter the appearance on some light-colored cars (silver) but never had a problem with SPI Universal clear.
