Clear Question

M

Mike.

Ok first off I would like to say that this site is a wealth of knowledge, not a day goes by that i dont lean somthing new THANKS. My question is when spryaing clear and you get a little heavy in spots you can get solvent pop. But on the other side of this if you have a run in your clear there is no solvet pop in the run? A few diffrent views would be great.

Interesting question.

My understanding of solvent pop is that the clear starts to skin over before enough solvents have a chance to escape (from improper flash times, reducer, activator, very hot temps, etc.). When the trapped solvents break the skinned over surface, you see solvent pop.

With a run, the whole thing dries really slow unless you do something to accelerate it. Say you run the clear, then bake it. I bet you'd get solvent pop in your run then. I'm interested in hearing other thoughts on this one.

Bob, was it right away or after baking? Or slow cure time? i am still real green at this so I like to learn all the reasons for the problems that I can. My family and work say I have a serious diease, and that it is called (analisim) really have not found out if it is life threating yet..

i have gotten pop in a run plenty of times. its usually in the drip part of it but i have gotten it. spi clears are however very tolerant of heavy spraying. i have never been able to get universal to pop. euro i can with excess coats and baking.

I've never gotten pop with SPI UV or MS but I have had it happen with a few PPG clears, no bake, one was a PPG Global Radiance candy job and where there was heavier clear buildup on some of the panel edges there was pop-the cause was not enough flash time for the base before clear was applied.

Cool, that helps resolve my question flash time is everything a few extra minutes and lighter on my coats will help. SPI Universal will be all I use from here on out.

Let the base flash off good before the clear goes on and you won't have problems. SPI clear isn't susceptible to pop at all IMO.

Been waiting a long time to use some spi, this will be my first time and I would like to cure some of my bad habits before i do.
