Devilbiss FinishLine 3 or 4 ? best metalic base coat gun to buy?

A

adrynalinjunkie

Well after 2 years of welding on new 1/4's and getting the body PERFECT.

I am just going to use my Iwata LPH 400 LV for the clear and buy a dedicated basecoat metalics gun.

That being said has anyone compared the Devilbiss Finishline 3 vs 4 ?

Or what about the Devilbiss GTI is it worth the extra $$$ for shooting Metalics ???

What do you think is the 4 worth it for metalics and pearl bases?

or should I just buy this

They are both made in USA right?

I should probably just buy the GTI and work some O.T. at work huh?

I am curious on the finishline 4 and the changes. I am weird and I really like the 3.

I have an lph400 Iwata and I just cant seem to get the hang of this gun. I dont know whats wrong with me.

you have the top of the line gun and your going to buy a cheap gun for color ?????? i do not understand putting 2 years work into a project then using either 2nd line paint or a cheap gun.

Shine. maybe you can help me. I thought I read that you spray with an lph400. What cap do you use? I bought mine with an orange cap and I have had some mottling with some silvers. I know thats a tough color in general.

the purple cap works much better. the orange is for the fine pearl tri-colors.
it took me a while to adjust to the iwata. you have to feed it. 60 lbs at the wall wont get it ( thanks barry ! ) . adjust , adjust , adjust ! once you dial it in to match your speed it's great . i do not run it wide open.

I've always ran my air at 130 at the wall. I've played around with test panels. I usually run mine at about needle 2.5 turns out and fan wide open. spray my metallics at about 26psi, seems to be what I get the best results with(then again maybe my results arent very good). I've never tried the 19 or what they recommend. Maybe I should.

When I looked at the site when ordering it it said the purple was for fine pearls, but I will take your expierence over that. I will order a purple cap and give her a whirl. I wish I sprayed more often so that I could get more time with it. I really like the feel of the gun.

Here is another question for ya. How do you get the fittings out of the bottom of the cups? I have a brand new 1000ml cup, but it has a different style fitting on the bottom. The cup I currently have that came with the gun got damaged. Is it even possible to get the little micro set screw out?

I don't know how to get the set screw out (can't even tell if it is a set screw) but I accidentally bought a cup that fits the Iwata. My Devilbiss Finishline gun came with a smallish plastic cup so I bought an aluminum one that looked like it would fit. Turns out it didn't fit but I kept it anyway. When I bought my LPH400 I tried the cup and it fits. The replacement cup doesn't have a very tight plastic top and the Iwata top is a little too big but it was only $8 a couple of years ago. Now it's $17 but I think the Iwata cup is over $50.
Harbor Freight cup is on the left, Iwata on the right:

You would be amazed at how many posts I've read from Iwata owners that have
problems spraying metallics with that gun. I too find my other guns are much better
at metallics than the Iwata. I use the Iwata only for clear.
If it was so good at metallics, then why did they come out with another cap
trying to spray it better? Oh sure, you can make it work, but you can make any gun
work if you play with it long enough.
Bottom line, my other "cheaper" guns do it better and easier.
I use a Astro for colors.
The Iwata is a great clear gun. I'll use it for that.

my iwata with the purple cap shoots metallics better than any gun i've owned. it will lay it down wet and even . except for the dcm ppg crap. that i will never use again.

Thank you shine for your input. I will be ordering a new cap for mine and giving it a shot!

So if I buy a devilbiss that is dedicated to metalics and pearls only which 1 would you guys recommend?

I am tempted to sell my orange air cap and just keep the Iwata with the silver cap for clears only.

Holly Cow 12-15 psi for what the base ??? I thought 20-24 psi was best for clear? Or with a 1.3 do I really want that low of pressure for base and clear?

When I jammed the doors it turned out so nice with 22 psi for base and clear, I have a hard time going lower, but if you guys recommend it I will shoot a test panel.

I just ordered the purple cap BTW, should I keep the orange for solid colors or be a cheap arse and sell it?

Just got the purple cap. I will post picks in a few weeks when I am done.
