Dye or "paint" a dash pad.....

has anyone used the vinyl dye's or "paints" available for changing the color of a dash pad?

I believe SEM makes some marine vinyl dye's & I called Just Dashes as I;d read they sell dye for color changing but they advised against trying to dye a gold pad black as the gold color in the early Satellite dashpads had a metallic component in it which didn't allow it to be dyed evenly.

can anyone recommend anything aside from getting i recovered?
Thanks, Evan

I've used a lot of it without fail. The trick is to clean it well. I'm not sure about the gold tho. But I have had some colors take up to 6 coats to cover evenly.

I painted mine. RM Diamont has a mix ratio for interior applications. The dash pad was a repo in black, the lower pad under the radio area was brown and the remainder were the original green. No flex agent was added.

By the way, I have used the SEM dye many times before without any issues either.

Sounds like it may work. Which products did you guys use?

SEM has the Marine vinyl coat & color coat - any experience with these?

I said "dye" but actually it is a paint product. SEM Color Coat.
Like dub said, the trick it to get it really clean. SEM also makes a Plastic Prep for cleaning those hard plastic pieces before spraying color.

I was thinking about the marine stuff as its got higher UV protection supposedly & I've used the bumper coater product of theirs on my Datsun dash - that came out pretty well. I assume SEM wants me to buy their cleaners but I'd think the Dawn, SPI 700 W & G remover process would be OK too. Does a dash pad need an adhesion promoter - got some Bulldog if necessary.

I wonder if 6 coats of what Dub was using create build that's noticeable?

Thanks, Evan

The SEM sprays out like water. It's very thin. And you don't want to load it on. So it takes a few coats to cover. Color change may take a few extra depending on colors.

I would call Urethane supply. I use their bumper and cladding product and love it. Sticks like glue.

DuPont also has a good interior paint with a choice on gloss levels.
