EPA strikes solvents!

i would use it sparingly or only by hand if you plan to use it on the guns, it will dissolve the seals. Just a couple passes in the gun washer using mek softened/swelled the air valves in both of our LPH400's to the point they had to be drilled out to be extracted. Both guns suddenly started leaking air through the needle without trigger pull, the orings were cracked in both and in one it had spit into two pieces.
Uh Oh, no gun washer, but after everything, primer, base, clear, I have been washing/flushing out all of my guns with 3 or 4 cups or 1/2 cups of 50/50 MEK/acetone.

Is this not a good idea? Better way??

Wouldn't use MEK for the reasons listed above. Either a good wash thinner like Dupont/Axalta 105 or use urethane reducer. You could mix in your acetone with either one as well. Watch out for cheap wash thinner as sometimes it will have acid in it and it will etch aluminum.

If you are fairly low volume then just use straight urethane reducer. Something like SPI 870.

Does acetone work better as a cleaner, I thought lacquer thinner was the go to for gun cleaning.

Acetone is one ingredient in lacquer thinner. It cleans well but evaporates very fast. Works better if mixed in with something else like reducer or lacquer thinner. Only reason to do so would be to use up any that one may have on hand.
