Epoxy over filler

X

XR-7

With all of the talk about waiting to put anything over fresh epoxy, I have a different question.
I had my car media blasted and sprayed the whole thing with SPI epoxy. I make sure to wait the recommended time before doing anything else and scuff it if needed. As I do my filler work over the epoxy, how long do I need to wait after sanding my filler work before applying another coat of epoxy? Does it need 24 hours to cure properly?

Thanks

Chris

No, even an hour is plenty for all quality fillers.

Your next application of epoxy will soak into the filler some, and show a duller finish than the surrounding area. This is normal.

If you use any type of cleaner on the filler before primering, then you definitely need to wait a good while for the liquid cleaner to evaporate fully from the porous filler. This is not recommended unless there is a known contaminant on the filler surface.

Crash,

Thanks for the reply. I have searched a lot for an answer but never could find anything. I have been working on different panels but have been able to let them sit overnight before spraying epoxy. I hope to finish the filler on another tonight and get it sprayed so I can move ahead tomorrow on my day off.
I have been reading this forum for the last year and a half preparing for this project. I painted my daughters 2000 Eclipse last summer in my garage and it came out great for a first time. I knew little about SPI on that project but ended up using Universal Clear over Omni Plus base and Keystone 2K primer recommended by a friend.
My current project is a '68 Cougar XR-7 that I have owned since 1987. I finished it once going the cheap route in 1995 but it sat and had been neglected for the last few years. It was media blasted, coated with SPI black epoxy, and will get SlickSand, and more epoxy. Other than the poly primer and basecoat, I plan to stick with SPI on the whole thing. I haven't looked locally yet but plan to use ProSpray base from the recommendations on here. Hopefully paint will be next summer.

Thanks again,

Chris

i would never seal filler without a good day of cure. remember it is polyester . often the mix is off which can retard the cure . i prefer overnight .
