Evercoat quantum

I posted over at the other site before it was closed asking if anyone has use the quantum. I finally got to use some this week and the verdict is still out. I've been using marson platinum for years now and have been dead set on that. I know shine was wanting to hear from anyone who has used it so here it goes. Seems to be a bit thicker than the marson and doesn't seem to spread as good. That isn't a bad thing, just isn't what i'm used to. As far as fill-- in one wipe, it fills more than one wipe of the marson, with less pinholes. Easy of sanding?? HOLY COW. Now the marson sands like butter and i never thought there was anything that sanded better, till now. Even while it's still in the green stage, it will knock down with 40g without clogging the paper as much. For those guys who only use 80, you'll love this stuff. I let some sit overnight, came in this morning and it sanded the SAME with 80 grit, easy. Seems to feather better than the platinum while in the green stage also. Also feathers ontop of itself better than the platinum. One thing about it though, use you use twice or more the amount of hardener than you would the other fillers. At first i wasn't using enough of the hardener, so it seemed too thick and wouldn't spread. Added more hardner the next go around and was still able to pull the whole panel and was more consistent.

So, all in all, i might be sold on this. I dont know the exact cost difference between it and the marson but if more, it might be justified. Less pinholes, more fill, easier to sand. All of this is just based in comparison to the marson (which i believe is better than rage gold & extreme)

I've been debating giving it a try but from what i remember it was quite a bit of a price difference. I also use marson.
Have also been thinking about giving some of the USC fillers a try.

I tried the putty version and didn't see what all the fuss was about. I didn't realize they had a quantum version of regular body filler now.

As I understand it, it's claim to fame is being able to withstand a 500 hour salt spray test, bare filler over steel, with no corrosion of the steel. Have you heard that?

I've played with the quantum filler and don't see enough benifits to change. It does spread nice and pinhole less but the tacky surface sucks when you're using finer grits to break it on detail work unless you thinner wash the surface before sanding to remove the residue. Adhesion to SPI epoxy is very good. Cost difference sucks. The caulking tube dispenser type is a gimmick IMO-cut one open and see how much material is there, and the tips plug up between use which screws up the mix ratio. This forum is really cool!

I went to a shop and had a customer talking about it, he says he hates it because it smells like cat pee.. I had to laugh..

i will switch to anything epoxy. if i were looking for something easy i would find something else to do . :) i just hate polyester. period. i know most of you use it with no problems but every problem i have had in the lat 10 years or so was traced back to polyester of some sort. dynatron bondo products suck !
the quantum is an epoxy hybrid so i will use it even if it is a little more trouble. hope to use some soon .

There are no polyamines or epoxides in the Quantum MSDS. I would have though they would need to be mentioned, if present. Maybe Barry could shed some light?

go to the web site and look under quantum filler. it is a hybrid mix of polyester and epoxy.

Evercoat’s first single step body repair technology specifically designed for large, multi-panel or vertical panel repairs. Its non-sag formula is specially engineered to have excellent filling properties on vertical panels, while eliminating the need for finishing putty. Quantum1 utilizes patent pending 10:1 technology that is the successful integration of polyester and epoxy chemistries. As a result, Quantum1 has less shrinkage, better sandability and better repair holdout than traditional body fillers and putties. Quantum1 also passes 500 hours salt spray (ASTM B117) and is compatible with HAPS-compliant and waterborne coatings. Use with Quantum 10:1 BPO Catalyst (#457/458) only!

the epoxy is in the hardener. check the msds in that. That is why so much more hardener is needed. when i say alot more, i mean ALOT more. there are 2 temp hardeners, use them as you would temp grade reducers.
