Redoing a old chris-craft boat. Need to fill in the exhaust ports. Looks like about 3/4 inch wood then 3/8 inch fiberglass. Here is what i was thinking tell me what you think. Cut a round piece of 3/4 inch plywood just a little smaller that the hole that is there. Then use some west system thickend epoxy ( says is very good for bonding wood together). Glue new peice of wood into the hole. Then bevel the the area around the the repair out a inch or so. Then use west system resin and mat to make flat. Then some evercoat 870 for filler work. That sound like a good repair?

I would bevel it out farther than an inch, more like 3-4 inches if it were me.

If you wait more than 24 hours to apply the mat, make sure to use a 3M pad or sand any epoxy on the surface. WEST systems epoxy (unlike some other brands) will amine blush which must be removed by sanding. Same applies to when you apply the filler over the mat and epoxy. Not a big deal, just something to be aware of.

You are just doing a small area so the mat shouldn't be a problem. Epoxy will not dissolve the binders in mat unlike the styrene in polyester resin which can make it a little harder to get the mat to lay flat and smooth. But since you will be sanding and using a filler over it, again it is not a big deal.

Good luck. Is that Chris Craft Scorpion?

did one many years ago. the owner found some stainless plates that bolted over the hole. dont have a clue where he found them but they bolted right in. the repair will show at times no matter what you do.
