fiberglass repair

I have aquired a 69 mach one hood scoop recently. it is an original piece and due to the past 40 years or so it has some cracks.

I know that I could mat and resin to fix and it wouldnt bee too much of a chore.... except for sanding it....

I was wondering, 3m panel bond, and im sure others are rated for fiberglass and other composites and was wondering if anyone had used it or anything similar in a like situation. The automix stuff isnt too bad to work with, sanding and shaping wise so I figured it may be a viable option??

there is only one correct way to fix a crack in fiberglass......grind it out and reglass it. if you use any kind of adhesive or panel bond your asking for ghosting issues or recracking down the road. reglassing a crack takes minutes. no longer than using panel bond.

thats what i had figured jim, no such thing as a free lunch, but i figured it was worth asking.

I plan to just use an 1/8" ball burr to clear material away, id think that with that small an area I should be okay just building up with resin?

no that will crack again. you cant just fill it with resin. that will have zero strength. you need to "V" the crack out. if its a small crack then maybe 3/4" on each side and layer up the glass in the crack.

Okay. I think I see. Its cracked around the sides so it may be .100" thick in the areas. I guess it'll be a bit like panel repair. Kind of grind the crack away then bevel back in I suppose.
