Fillers over epxoy and 2 part urethane primer

Once project has been sprayed with epoxy, its time for filler. I understand the ongoing debate about filler on bare metal or over epoxy, but dont want to open that issue here. So assuming filler follows epoxy:

Next step is 2 part urethane primer. Then if you still have areas you want to fill, can you use the same filler (evercoat rage) over the 2k primer that you used over the SPI Epoxy, or is there a better choice filler over 2 part urethane primer? Im using Evercoat products with SPI Epoxy and SPI 2 part urethane regular build primer. The roof will include a coat of slick sand over the first coat of epoxy.

Next step after filler should be more epoxy, mainly to cover bare metal spots, with the secondary benefit of giving you an ideal surface to lay some putty on any spots you missed. 2K urethane primer should only be sprayed once you are fairly certain that no more polyester fillers are needed. While you can but poly filler/putty on cured urethane primer, it is not a 100% problem free thing to do.

So epoxy, filler, more epoxy then polyester filler, then urethane for blocking? Im not sure I understand the difference between filler and polyester fillers.

All plastic fillers are polyester fillers, usually the finer finishing ones are called poly putty, but if they are hardened with cream hardener, they are all cousins and fit into the process about the same way.

If you knock through to the metal during the second poly putty stage, you should put one last coat of epoxy on before urethane primer, or at least spot in the bare spots with epoxy. Then you can go with the urethane.

Thanks for getting me up to speed on that crash..makes more sense now.

Crash, once I apply and block poly putty over the first application of epxoy, I have two options, apply another coat of epoxy over the entire area or just to the areas I have filler or sanded thru to bare metal. If its a large area like a roof or firewall, Im thinking I would just spot those areas. If its a small panel, I would coat the entire panel. Is that a good way to do it?

I get what your saying. At some point in time, In guessing you could end up with waves in the epoxy after spotting. Thanks Crash.
