First spray job ever.... Excellent customer service from CAL (Mill Ind.) and Barry

First off... I am tackling a Ford Excursion for a first complete spray job. It is an excellent father/son project. So far, we have the body prepped and primed with all SPI products. 2k and Epoxy. We prepped the jams and ran into some issues with paint (SPI pure white base). It was either running terribly or there was no coverage. 6 coats and we still were not covering the primer. With one phone call to Cal at Mill Industries, he met me halfway (he lives about an hour away from me) with another gallon of paint, reducer and activator. This was on a Friday and he was expecting company, but he put me first. Awesome. So here I was at home and fixing to spray again. I followed Cal's directions for setting up the paint gun (Tekna Copper w/1.4) and had some questions about the clear and gun settings so I called Barry. Nice as could be and he took the time explaining the base and clear, mixing, gun setup and some technique. It sprayed wonderfully. Only had a couple of runs and there was complete coverage in 2 coats but we put a third for GP. Then the Universal Clear went on yesterday. Let me tell you, that UC lays down like crazy and looks phenomenal. No orange peel and looks better than factory. We put two coats of clear down and were completely amazed at how well it turned out.
We used the same gun setup for base and clear coat. Tekna Copper w/1.4 tip, Fan at about 90-95%. Fluid at 2.5 turns out. With the digital regulator that came with the gun, it was wide open and showed 21psi with trigger pulled. Regulator at the wall was set at 125.

The biggest thing I have taken from my experience with SPI is the customer support. The products sell themselves and are all excellent. The time and effort from both Calvin and Barry have sold me on always using SPI for my future projects. My next project (this winter) is going to be a 70's Ford 4door 4x4 with a 6.0l powerstroke painted in flat black and matte clear. Cant wait.

Once again... Kudos to Cal and Barry for ensuring the novice/rookie painter is set up for success. You just can't walk into a store and get that much advice and tech support.

I just saw this and cannot thank you enough for the comments.

I was glad to help as well as I'm sure Cal was and most important glad the project turned out great!

Thanks
Barry

Bondsman, if this is your first paint job you might want to do yourself a favor and break that job down into spraying only 4-5 panels at a time-shooting a complete Excursion in one session might be a challenge. That's the nice thing about solid colors vs metalics.

Its been a pleasure working with you Kevin. Thanks for the kudos. I am still waiting on some pictures though...

Bob, I am working it in stages. We prepped, primed, block sanded the whole truck. For painting we are doing reduced epoxy as a sealer, then 3-4 coats of base and 3-4 coats of clear. Hood and roof in one stage (already done), so we can ditch the ladder. Door jambs and inside doors are done (did that first). Now the roof and hood and jambs are all masked (after sitting for a week). The rest of the truck is currently all masked off and awaiting for me to get out there and shoot.

Cal, I cannot tell you enough how much I appreciate you. Your customer service is beyond reproach. To go out of your way on your day off and meet me is something I would have never expected. Pics are coming. Kinda leary about painting with the humidity we are having today, but I think I am going to do it anyways.

Just a lil tip from a newbie.... taping the A pillar is a pain...until I found the 3m soft edge plus foam tape. I spent about 4 hours trying to mask the drivers side a pillar with regular soft edge foam tape and it kept rolling the adhesive out onto the fender. Tried masking tape, paper, plastic. all failed. I know I was probably being a little anal and my wife said "who is going to look in there anyways?". I just told her that I would see it and would hate seeing overspray in the door jamb. Picked up the 3m plus version of their foam tape and 10 minutes later all the jambs were perfectly sealed up.
