First time spraying. Feedback on my Epoxy?

Hey y’all,

This is my first time handling a spray gun and wanted to get some feedback. I’m going to redo these panels as I’m heading out of town for a few weeks and want to be able to do them better next time.

Using the HF Purple gun, about 33psi.

On the hood I’m noticing some specs like in the pics. Is this “trash” or something else? Tried to get some shots of the doors in the light. Orange peely but not sure if epoxy primer should be like that or not?

Let me know how I did!

That does not look right. It should be fairly slick with very subtle peel. That almost looks like it was too thick for the tip or it was sprayed when it was starting to set up.

It looks like it was being sprayed too dry. Slow down and maintain 4"-6" gun tip to surface. Is that a 1.3 tip? 1.4 or larger tip would spray better.

I was definitely too dry when I first started. I was way too far away. Probably kept it dry the whole time then even though I tried to correct.

It looks a bit different now from my pics. I took the first ones right after. Next time I’ll make sure it goes on wetter.

Question: should it induce in a sealed container or should it be open?

When I see dry epoxy, it has a very fine texture to it, almost like a high grit sandpaper. That to me looks like your gun wasn't atomizing it properly, so you could have a gun issue.

Another possibility is if your cup was vented, or the vent hole was plugged in your cup. This can also cause chunky spray like that. Your picture kind of looks like Slick Sand before it's sanded.

You should keep it sealed when you induce it. I just put some Saran wrap or foil on top of the mixing cup, and then crimp it all the way around the edge of the cup. I keep a roll of saran wrap in the shop.

If you don't have saran wrap in your shop but want some, the easiest way to get it is to walk into the kitchen, take your wife's box of saran wrap, and put it in the shop. Now it's yours.
