So this afternoon I was spraying a hood, bedside,and bumper filler. Had everything washed off, and wiped down with wax and grease remover. Epoxy sealer and base went on nicely. At about 4:30 my detail guy comes and asks if he can shine the interior on the pickup he was cleaning, I've told him before not to spray any detail products while I'm painting so that's why he asked. good employee! ... I thought about it for a bit he only had 20 minutes left of the day I said sure go ahead. I went and wrote out the checks they all left and I went back to spraying. Layed my first coat of clear and fish eye everywhere! (The detail Bay is a whole 90 ft at the other end of the shop from where I paint). I racked my brain trying to figure out what it was. thought it was surface contamination so I tried different panels from outside and same thing every time! Finally I narrowed it down to the air. But I got two oil catchers as well as a refrigerated dryer! How could I be getting compressor oil through all of that? I went and drained the tank but no excessive amount of water? And then it hit me! He was detailing this truck about 20 ft away from my air compressor! My compressor was sucking some of his interior shine lol. So I purged the air out of the tank by letting it run for about 15 minutes with the valve open on the bottom of the tank. After that I Purged it out of my line for another 10 minutes. And then back to spraying no fisheye this time! Hopefully I learned my lesson now! I've been thinking about putting my compressor air intake to the outside!

Was your booth fan running during all of this? I've had that happen several times over the years. Had to redo one when the Bosses son was spraying armor all 20 feet from the booth while I was spraying. I about came to blows with him over that.
Being you are the Boss, might be a good time to switch all the detail products over to body shop safe stuff (silicone free).

2 of the body shops I sell to had similar situations as this. One shop narrowed it down to brand new tires that had been installed on a car in the shop, which either had lots of silicone content or some fresh coating that was getting released into the air causing a problem. The other had a young body man that used product in his hair that was aerosolizing into the finish. There is a lot of ways to ruin a paint job.
No I had it shut off. Although I'm sure that could still be a possibility of contaminated room air landing on the surface. In my case it was contaminated air coming directly out of the air compressor. I proved this by testing on a fresh panel that was stored outside and was still getting fish eye. After I flushed fresh air through the compressor and line it went away. ( hopefully there's not too much caught in the filters and stuff still). Yeah I need to make a change, Either body shop safe products, or plumping my compressor intake outside. How many of you guys have plumbed your compressor air intake outside with good results?

Did it a few years ago. Was easy since my compressor is against an outside wall. Just got some black pipe and drilled a hole. Works great.
