Hanging new quarter panels question

S

Senile Old Fart

I am in the process of fitting new qp's on a 65 Mustang.

After cutting out the old ones, and looking at the fit of the new ones .

The first couple of inches of the wheel opening going up the side of the qp are in contact or near contact with the wheel house. I feel this causes water and dust to trap here and cause a lot of the cancer problems these cars have.

The question is what is your opinion of coating this area with seam sealer before final attachment of the panel(s)?

good idea or will it cause different worse problems later?

Both surfaces have 2 coats of epoxy on them now.

Thanks.

It won't be a problem if it's not a weld area. This contact area creates a void that can't be coated once it's together? Is it on or will it be on a rotisserie?

I think the originals were a two piece wheel house spot welded together, and that was spot welded all around the quarter wheel opening flange. The only place it should have a gap, and its a small one, is at the front bottom for drainage.

Seam sealer is nasty when it catches on fire, so I tend to shy away from that kind of thing. If you are welding and not panel bonding, I think the best that can be done is to use a wand to spray epoxy in there once the welding is complete. After paint, you can go back in with the same kind of wand and spray in some cavity wax. That is best practice on new and old vehicles alike, imo.
