Help with compressor

I have 2 boats, both 25' with 9 ' beams to paint. Talked to Barry at SPI, great guy. He says 7HP/80 gal is about the lowest for HVLP. Found a working ChargeAir Pro 6HP/60 gal 230 V just around the corner of my house for $250. Do you think that's enough? I've been looking at compressors for 2 weeks. Any help is welcome. Thanks, Ed

ed you cant go by hp rating. hp ratings are all marketing. 15 cfm @90psi is min of what you will need.

Hey Jim. I've seen alot of used 60 tanks, I'd like to find an 80 gal, but if I can get 60 gal tank with such a rating for CFM, would it work? I read the article Crashtest gave me, I'm looking for a lower (1750?) RPM as well.

Ed the tank size has nothing to do with how much air the compressor puts out. The larger the tank the longer it takes for the compressor to kick on and off. Its just reserve capacity. With continuous air tools like sanders and spray guns the tank makes no difference.

Jim, found 2 used Champion 7.5 hp/ 80 gal compressors for $800. I'm getting them shipped this week. They're rated at 23 CFM @175 (max) psi. I figured that would do it.
