How to clean your paint gun?

Finally got me a gallon of this carb cleaner and for the past week i cant keep stuff out of it!!! lol...all my guns are squeeky clean...all my pps containers look brand new...all my mixing sticks are brand new! Stuff is great!!! I've wasted so much money on new pps cups from cleaing them with thinner..eventually the plastic just gets ate up with the thinner (even reducer)...and using paint stripper is so time consuming. Sink them in this stuff for an hour or so and scrub and they are brand new!

Wow Barry, I've just taken to using them little strainers in my gun. They get thrown away after a paint job. I strain the materials into the mix cup and into the gun, are these little in the paint gun strainers just redundancy or are they a finer mesh than the strainers from the paint store?

Sorry to bring back an old thread here...

I got a gallon of the Berryman's Carb Cleaner this week to try on my well-dirtied primer gun first. Soaking the fluid tip now... Do those of you using the carb cleaner leave it in your mixing room, or do you store it somewhere else? The only reason I ask is the carb cleaner has a "oily" feel about it and I don't want to contaminate my mixing room / spray gun storage area.

Barry, in your first post on the carb cleaner, did you say you put the whole gun in the carb cleaner? Just the removable parts I would assume. Maybe soak the head of the gun in a cup?

break the gun down. then clean the parts. also never use scotchbrite on them. i keep my cups polished so nothing sticks to them .

Is this the right stuff???

i just seen that gallon jug that tthomp50 posted a picture of at autozone for 27 and change. is that the right stuff? if so i will pick some up

you only need it if the gun is real nasty or was let with something in it. otherwise you can get it just as clean with reducer.

Wow...I'm going try this carb cleaner. However, my experience has always been no matter how good I cleaned my "clear gun" it always had some trash in it that showed up in the job/s. Until...drum roll....and this is a trade secret obviously no one knows about....not sure I feel comfortable sharing this one...haha....stick your gun in an ultrasonic cleaner for 5 mins and you won't believe how good it works. It cleans microscopically. They are heated also! I clean my clear gun every day in one and have almost 0 trash from clear build up inside my gun!!!!!!!!

Hi. 1st post here. I'm just an occaisonal DIY painter, planning to try SPI epoxy on my next project. Thought I'd add this minor bit, found it on youtube, works for me.
I like to spray into a rag to cause some backflush of solvent into the cup. I think it helps flush the internal channels. Too much though and the top pops off :)

I can't find the "brand" of the one i bought. Got it on eBay about 4 years ago. Works really well though and they are heated. I have a 6 liter version which allows you to put ur whole gun into. If you decide to look into getting one they all say you can't use flammables. They all say tat...but it works fine...use it EVERY DAY...for 4 years...I'm sorry not every day I try not to work 7 days a week.

On a side note how well does that Carb cleaner work. From what I understand some ultrasonic clears work better than others. I'd like to give my gun a "once over". My clear gun has some build up that I'd like to clean up.

do not back flush a gun using a rag or anything else. keep clean and you wont need carb cleaner or anything else.

The think instructions on my Sata actually says not to use ultrasonic as a cleaning method.

I put a little bit of thinner in the gun, shale it up, pull the trigger with no air until there is a good flow, dump it, refill a little bit, same process. Then I take it apart, clean it up, put back together and put it in the cabinet.

I did do the carb cleaner to clean my primer gun cup. worked good.

I had a parts cleaner in my garage that I had plans of hosing up to to use thinner for cleaning my gun. I just never followed through on it and sold it.

Why not? I learn better if I know the reason :)

your forcing paint residue back through the system. this ends up making the needle sleeve leak and can get residue back into the air passages.
