Insurance during restoration

If you get collector car/classic insurance through any of the Majors like Allstate. Geico etc. all of whom offer it, you will get the same adjusters and cost cutting methods that they employ on regular automotive insurance. I've personally seen that. Where Hagertys differs is that they have their own adjusters that specialize in classics, and they are more willing to restore your vehicle to it's pre accident condition without all the cost cutting measures. One reason why they are higher in their quotes than others. Personally I would only use Hagertys.

A good question to ask a prospective Insurer is to ask the question "who underwrites your policy"? Rarely will it be the company you are purchasing the insurance from. That's not necessarily bad, but some of the next questions to ask are "who are your adjusters"? "Do your adjusters specialize in Classics" "Do they work for your company or the company underwriting the policy?" "What is your policy on repair?" "Are you willing to repair my car the correct way and restore it to 100% pre accident condition, using the same methods as my car was constructed? "What about repair Shops" Do you have a network of qualified shops or shops that you recommend?"

Lot more to it than just the lowest price IMO. What if your car was metal finished. You get a dent in the door. "Is your Company willing to pay for my door to be finished the same way as it was originally?" Most of the time they will not be. So now you have a door with filler in it.
One particular example I have experience with was a 1940 Ford that was painted candy apple red. True candy color, gold base, red candy mid. Front end hit. Damage to the fenders, grille, and hood. Adjuster had no knowledge of candy paint and would only write it to blend. Blending candy is essentially impossible. We tried to tell him that. Went around and around for several weeks. Adjuster would not write it for a complete repaint. Customer got tired of waitng and ended up paying the extra cost to have the car redone completely. Idiot adjuster never did admit that you can't blend a candy. Customer had "classic" insurance through State Farm.

Chris, this is all excellent information, thank you. Yeah if I go to the trouble of choosing "classic" car insurance then I expect it will be different than the run of the mill insurers who don't give a rat's butt about the work I've done or the investment.

Chris's advice plus this little nugget just sealed the deal for me. Hagerty it is!

I was going to ask if anyone had State Farm as that's who my "normal" insurance is with? I asked my agent about this a while back, and I thought the rates they quoted me were very reasonable.
I have all my insurance with state farm inc company vehicles
I been with them 30 years and pay about 30,000 a year, all said in done.
Never let them insurance a classic car as their policy is "stated value."
Vs. agreed value.
So as an adjuster, if you total your car, I see you have a 40-year-old vehicle here is 5000. So you fight from their starting point.
Agreed value like my friend when his Chevelle was totaled adjuster had entire 75000 check-in his hand in 2 days no ifs or buts.
Stated means nothing, just your opinion.

I have 4 cars insured with Hagardy all for $20k-$35k (including the Valiant under construction for the same reason you stated... I have $15k worth of parts sitting around for it). It cost me $750 a year. I also have heard nothing but good things about them and they even insured the girls cars (19 and 21) after learning they were involved in the restoration of their cars. I did not even get another quote.

Wow your rates are MUCH cheaper than mine, although I did include that my specific vehicle is modified, makes way more HP than stock, and will probably visit the track 2-3 times per year.

They never asked any questions like that. Just the VIN and they gave me a quote
