Is it possible to touch up these center caps ???

Joe 73

These are my center caps for my 73 chevelle SS. The right cap has the black area in the center were it says chevrolet. The left cap (and 3 others that I have) all faded in that area. I dont think its possible, but does anyone have any ideas on how to "redo" the black on the left cap? Or do I just have to live with them ? Thanks guys. Center caps.jpg

Unless someone has a better way and idea I would mask the outside ring and edge, spray the entire center section and rub (buffing wheel on bench grinder) the center after it cured until the raised letters start showing thru. You might be able to lightly wetsand the paint off the raised sections also then lightly buff any scratches that might be on the letters. But wait to see if anyone else has a better idea it worked on small items for me in the past.

yeah, the MT Valve cover trick, paint it and sand it after. You can use a DA with really fine paper and just go finer and finer until you buff to take the black off slowly. But maybe the ring and letters are not really as high up as they look in the pictures.

I've done that valve cover trick years ago and it worked good. I think the letters are raised enough but they are also just as high as the outside ring. But it is an option. I'd love to do something to make them look better.

They also have a small 2 or 3in buffing pad for tight areas and headlights you could use one of those too on a drill.

I was thinking of something like that. The letters are raised pretty good but a pinch lower than the surrounding ring. Im thinking the small buffing pad maybe on a drill press. Pad smaller than the surrounding ring. That way I could put the cap on the pedestal and lower the pad onto it. Definitely something I'm going to play with over the winter and after the cars painted.
Thanks for the ideas.

There is a chance to use a squeege type piece of gasket material with a rag on top to wipe off some of the paint after you spray it, but it usually ends up dripping and ruining the job. Maybe using base clear would let you sand off the letters and clear everything.
