Iwata lph 400 problem

I have been struggling with my lph 400 with the purple cap. It seems that it is spraying heavy on the ends of the pattern. I have tried everything I can think of. Raise pressure, lower pressure, wide open fan and narrowing fan. It seems to not really affect it when using the purple cap. I have tried setting it up to the operator manual hub recommends and still doesnt help. I have seen reference to a chop stick trick but cant seem to find what thats all about. Has anyone ever done it or care to share? Thanks!

The baby holes plug real easy, spray some stripper on it or soak in carb cleaner, then shake cap in urethane reducer.

I asked Hub yesterday and still havent heard back. I will disassemble the gun again tonight and give it another thorough cleaning. Maybe Im missing something. Thanks!

heavy on the ends results from too much air. blowing the center of the fan away. how much pressure ? 16 to 18 max with the purple cap. if you have any other kind of reg but the iwata you will never get it right.

I have an iwata regulator. Not sure the number of it. You turn the face of it to adjust the pressure. The last setting I tried was what the OM Hub recommends which was 8-10 psi inlet, full material, full fan. I dont paint every day, and its been a couple months since I used the purple cap. It just doesnt seem to spray the metallics like I thought it used to. Last metallic was a bright silver on a jeep and I didnt have any problems at all with it. This lemans blue is killing me though!!

I just looked and the regulator is an Iwata 8018. Looks like it has been replaced with an 8130B.
Here is what mine looks like:

I used that cap at 14PSI, and had the fan choked down a bit. It is designed to get in really close (4") at very low air pressure. When it works, it works good, but I found it to be too intolerant of conditions where its impossible to hold the gun perfectly perpendicular to the surface. It's a temperamental cap, imo. Most of the time, the silver one is easier to work with, though it uses more paint.

That is an air control valve, it is nothing more than a flow restrictor. It does not regulate pressure. The only thing it does is limit the amount of air flow against a given restriction.

If you inlet pressure drops, so will the cap pressure of the gun.
Air supply pressure goes up when compressor kicks on, air pressure at the cap goes up. (assuming your compressor regulator is set at 100psi+ and your compressor doesn't kick on until 90psi or lower)

Those things are great for a speed controller on a die grinder or air hammer and not much else imho.

A diaphragm is needed for a regulator.

RTI makes a good diaphram reg, but even the cheapy china diaphram regs are better than the valve type.

if your using an iwata i suggest you use the correct iwata reg . it has a larger black knob on it. any reg that goes from 0 to 20 is useless.
just like the henrob torch . a regular set of gauges will not work as they will not deliver 4 lbs.Anest-Iwata-Compact-Diaphragm-Style-Regulator-AK-1R.jpg

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I will be in the market for a new regulator. I got the gun several years ago on the group buy here. I got this regulator that the time and thought it was one that was recommended. Guess not. lol Thanks for all the help. I stepped away from the project for a few days to regroup and hope to get back on it later this week. I ll keep you all posted when I get back to it. Thanks again!!!

SOF posted the part number of the correct regulator in this post:

If you have a Napa store close you could look into these part numbers for a Diaphragm regulator is P/N 776-3768 $10.00 for the reg, and the Gauge is P/N 701-2000 for $8.69. The Gauge starts at 0 and in pound increments up to 60lbs.

I bought an iwata regulator formy gun
It is part # AK-1R. It has a smaller blue control knob

I have both an Iwata and an RTI, both work great. See no difference in them.
