Metal Kitchen Cabinets.....

So, I've been asked if I would paint some old metal kitchen cabinets, mainly just the doors. I'm guessing they must be from the 60's and are in good shape. What kind of finish would these have on them? My plan was to clean them up real good, use W&G remover, scuff and put on a coat or 2 of epoxy primer, then base/clear. Anyone have experience with this? I would think the epoxy would stick fine.

Also, she wants like a white or off-white pearl look to them. I just want to do a 2 stage job, any suggestions? I would guess just a metallic color of sorts, eh?

Make sure she really wants glossy doors, they will show smudges well. As far as color goes, I am not aware of any white pearlescent finishes that are not 3 stage, the reason being that white is too opaque to show off the pearl particles. They must be suspended in a midcoat or intercoat clear over the white ground coat. It's not terribly complex, but it does warrant extra time, say about 1/3 more refinish time + material than a normal 2 stage job.

Could a person shoot the intercoat over a white epoxy, then clear? Wonder how that would look. You are right about the smudges, what else could a guy do, say for other finishes? Thanks for the help.

There is no point to using the intercoat unless you are going to mix dry pearl into it. You probably should use a white basecoat over white epoxy, it will only take a couple coats over a good white groundcoat. That way it will be the desired shade and be consistent over the whole job.

To reduce gloss, just get some of Barry's new flattener and mix it into the clear until you find a sheen that's acceptable.
