Middle priced base coat under UC?

T

TRT

First time I will be using SPI UC. The price on the clear was great, I hate spending $275 for one gallon of DBC9700 factory Pack Black from the local jobber. Has anyone used Matrix Systems basecoat? Any other suggestions?

guys around here rant and rave about matrix. i just don't see it. they love the price, but they arent exactly the "care about the job 6 months from now" type of guys. I've tried just about all there stuff and wont touch it ever again. clear..base..primer...poly...junk imo. We had to redo a resto paint job once because they supplied us with he wrong clear, so they say. We razor bladed off a 3x3 paint square off the primer a week after painted, and gave it to them to send off to the "lab" and somehow they lost it in transition. Luckily sikkens supplied us with enough clear to redo the job...but it is only a bandaid. Matrix never offered us anything...labor came out of our pocket, and if it werent for our paint rep, materials would have too. Good company!! (matrix)

Odd.. as i have used the matrix 2k primer, epoxy and clear all once.. That does not lend me an expert with the brand by any stretch, however I did not have any issues with it.. I know JimC used to use matrix before he found spi and didnt have bad experiences with it as far as I remember.. I think I have seen him say it was more brittle than spi but he had good experience with it..

I can vouch for Pro Spray base.. Very good base that is middle of the road I think in cost if you find the right jobber.. Chad on here sells pro spray to many spi members.. I dont know what a gallon of black base cost. Last time I bought a gallon of black was Barrys and i keep waiting for him to bring it back!!!!!!

Thanks for the responses. If SPI made base I would buy theirs. I have already purchased the UC from them. I don't know of a Pro Spray dealer in town. I will call Pro Spray in the morning to find the closest dealer. What about R-M, Transtar, Nason, HOK or any others?

Rm is what i use here in the shop. Very good bit expensive. A gallon of d403 black is around $325. I also have been using hok for many years. Their bc25 is very black and good quality. Never had an issue putting spi over or under it.

I can recommend ProSpray basecoat, used it several times. Contact Chad.S on this forum, he's the one I use even though he isn't local.

Glenn.

havent used prospray so i cant comment. have been using matrix for almost 5 years. never had a problem. i like sem black. its blacker then hok. and its a 1 to 1 mix too.
