Motobase, Sherwin Willams Rod & Custom, Shopline plus

I've sprayed that hugger orange in shopline on 2 engine blocks. One time was over a black epoxy which coverage sucked. The other time was over spi white epoxy and it covered in 2 coats...

When I bought the paint I went to ppg jobber and asked for "chevy orange" and , they told me it was hugger orange, and a Mopar color. Go figure.

Classic Chevy Hugger Orange is paint code 72 or WA3959. It's generally expressed as both as GM used 72 for a number of colors over the years.

When I was doing a 71 Chevy truck in hugger orange I discovered that there were three hugger orange colors. The truck had a different shade than the cars in the late 60s and early 70s. But it was still close. And the discussion continues lol.

I have the color chip. SPI Orange is super bright in sunlight. Believe me, i had my eye on it for a long time now. Its just too bright IMHO. Another gentleman on here calls it As Bright As Barry Can Make It Orange (ABABCMO)

Me and my Coronet!

Every time I see Shines truck I ask myself is his camera different or did he do something different than I did because my Coronet when parked next to any other orange I have seen just glows compared to anything else. There is clearly way more red in it than any hugger orange or vitamin C orange I have seen with my Coronet.

Reds ae genrally the most expensive toner and after looking up the formula for the Motobase Hugger Orange, it uses several red toners along with ornage and yellow. That would explain why it is more. First time I've encountered that with Motobase in my limited amount of experience using it. And I'm shocked that DBC wasn't higher considering anything DBC is min $1000/gallon now. Reds were always the most expensive color in DBC. SO who knows?
Donny I do think it's worth getting the Motobase even though it's more than you budgeted for. In the long run you will forget about the $200 and be happy with the car. Keep in mind too, Motobase covers real well and Omni and the like do not. So a gallon of Motobase is more like 1.5 gallons of Omni. Some of the real cheap stuff is so diluted it may take 2 gallons to equal the 1 gallon of Motobase.
Thanks Chris, yes I am going to up the budget after the initial shock wore off on how much paint is now LOL. I'm starting to think a mistake was made with the DBC @ 1050. If I can get the DBC I'm gonna go that route. Thank you for your input.

Glad to hear you were able to find it locally, and for less than what they quoted me. Good luck with the job.

I want to thank you guys for helping me pick a base. I was able to get the Motobase for 850 from my local jobber. He did recommend their DTM/Sealer instead of reduced epoxy and to use Motobase clear. He said reduced Epoxy was not the way to go LOL. I told him I'm good for now. Thx again guys.
While you were at it, did you drive down to Autozone to get some car advice?

I get a kick out of auto parts store guys when they give advice like they are experts. Especially the baby faced 18 or 19 yo.

Obviously this guy is only out to sell product. Always disappointing when a Jobber spouts BS to try and push his stuff. Donny if you ever have doubt about something, asking here first is the best idea. You handled it well.

Believe me, I know. He mentioned 3x he’s not trying to sell me his stuff. I just listened and said to myself, I wish one of you guys were here lol. I did good though, 850 out the door.
