New Fuel Tank

Hi All, I'm putting a new fuel tank in my 2002 Subaru Outback and want to make sure it is as protected from rust as possible (rust killed the original tank, from outside). Starting with epoxy primer seems like the best plan. The tank uses a 'Ni-terne steel' - plating to prevent corrosion, but is also painted from the factory. I'm a little concerned that the 80 grit will damage the Ni-terne plating (or remove it), but I really think getting a good coat of epoxy primer is worth it. Anyone have experience applying epoxy to such a tank? I was planning to brush it on, since I'm not worried about brush strokes, etc.
